Because you are greedy and can't stand for them to have money that you can't get your hands on?

Why should I have to pay property taxes and they be exempted?

Exactly what is the benefit to society of allowing some pastor the ability to stick the other taxpayers with the costs of servicing property that isn't providing a public benefit?

Actually, in Houston, its even worse than that. A mega church pastor here (Ed Young) got the Texas legislature to exempt him from paying his water/sewer bill. All of the other water customers in Houston have to cover his bill.

A Pastor isn't receiving the exemption, the non profit entity is. Churches and religious organizations do so much good for their communities I would not know where to start.

Please, if the government was buying its employees houses and cars and jets like the mega churches are, you'd (rightly) be screaming 'bloated government'. Exactly how can these 'charities' pay for all of those goodies and still provide services efficiently?

And its not just churches.

Churches are supported by people giving voluntarily. Government is supported by taxing by force. I think you are jealous of Olsteen and his success.

You may or may not agree with or like Osteen, but I can guarantee you that there are thousands whose lives were broken but have found peace and meaning and inspiration from his ministry. I know a bunch of them.

I'm not a huge fan, and I think Victoria is a first-class *itch, but I can't fail to give him credit either. I have no problem with his success. Then again, I'm not a greedy and envious person.

Ever notice how greedy people simply can't stand to see someone else have success?

I don't have a problem with his success but his voice, toothy grin, and wide eyes make him at least genetically predisposed to being a charlatan.

I tend to bristle at people with mega churches anyway.

Speaking of Osteen, was there any developments in the case where $600,000 of offerings to Lakewood were stolen? I haven't been able to find anything about it since it happened in March 2014. Even though the majority of it was in checks, it was still about $200,000 in cash.

One of the lines in the "Optimist Creed" is.... To "Promise yourself to be just as happy about the success of others as you are your own." Not always easy to do.

If someone wants to give Joel Osteen money, no problem. I just don't see why I should pay HIGHER taxes and HIGHER water bills simply because he isn't paying property taxes.

Nor do I see any benefit from tax benefits for donations to him either.

For me, its also an issue with Country Clubs, etc. too.

---

You know, it might help the standing of some of these groups if they weren't tax deadbeats. And sure, there are some (legitimate) charitable activities going on, but any charity that can buy private jets and 53 million dollar private houses isn't efficient. And if we're subsidizing them, then why can't we see their detailed financials? Transparency would be useful.

---

By the way, Annise Parker voted to give Osteen a good deal on his new 'church' (the old arena for the Houston Rockets). Why? Because it was a good deal for the taxpayers (the city would have to run it at a loss otherwise). There's really no hate here for him. He just needs to pay his property taxes and his water bill. He certainly can afford it.

---

For me, if you want a private club or a church (which is a private club), fine. But don't ask me to indirectly subsidize it. With government, you can vote for a new one. I have no vote in the River Oaks Polo Club or Second Baptist Church.

Nope. But reports were that the 600k represented just a small portion of his 'take' for one week.

If people want to subsidize his mansion and private jet, that's their business, so long as I don't have to pick up the tab.

Unfortunately, in Texas, I am doing just that, through higher property taxes and higher water/sewer bills.
