I have a hard time believing that with all the money that is being spent on Nippert, the powers that be at UC don't have reasonable expectations that UC is going into a P5 conference in the near future.

You have to make these types of upgrades to just compete in the G5. Everyone else, at our current level, is upgrading as well.

They are also gambling big money on a P5 invitation.

They are not gambling on a P5 invite. The athletic department needs the additional revenue stream, which the expansion will provide. Also, schools in our conf and ones, such as the MAC, are making substantial upgrades to their athletic facilities. In our conf some teams are building/upgrading arenas and stadiums. Heck, Cry-ami is building suites and an indoor practice facility at Yager.

This x1,000,000.
The reason we are enhancing Nippert has to with the revenue generated from premium seating. I recall reading a few years ago that we had the fewest number of premium seats and generated the lowest amount of revenue from premium seats of any school in what was then the BCS.
If we are doomed to G5 purgatory forever, we will need this additonal revenue stream more than ever before. We won't have a fat TV check and a huge cut of the football playoff to fall back on if we take a hit somewhere.
If we do get the call up to the P5, it will help make us competitive right away with the middle tier of the P5 (in terms of $$$$).
