WMU has one of the most powerful Tandem Van De Graaf Particle Accelerators in the United States and it's been in continuous use for Physics Research for over 30 years.

The first two NCAA College World Series were held at Hyames Field before they moved to Wichita and ultimately Omaha.

Broncos lost 1955 WS championship game to Wake Forest 7-6.

The American Baseball Coaches' Association (ABCA) Hall of Fame was located in Gary Center for many years.

WMU won back-to-back NCAA championships in Men's Cross Country 1964-65.

Western Michigan football shutout Michigan State in East Lansing in 1917. Western Michigan beat them again in East Lansing in 1919.

The WMU Solar Car race team-car is named 'Sunseeker'-has participated in EVERY collegiate Sunrayce event since it's founding in 1990. They race every 3 years! Even the UM team has missed a couple of races, due to failing to qualify.

WMU was one of only two Michigan universities to be honored as 'tree campuses' by the Arbor Day Foundation, along with UM-Ann Arbor. This was the 7th consecutive time WMU has won this award.

The WMU Medical School is one of only 6 medical schools in Michigan and the only one funded primarily by private funds. Currently two classes of approximately 130 students are enrolled at the school.

In addition to the Bronco Marching Band and various Jazz Bands, WMU has an excellent Symphony Orchestra:

Speaking of the jazz groups, Dr.Steve Zegree(sp?), the man who started many of them and put WMU on the map in those circles, has passed.

In 1916, George Gipp (yes, THAT George Gipp) with the Notre Dame Frosh drop-kicked a 62 yard field goal against Western State Normal School to help win that game, 10-6. Yes-that was a DROP KICK!

WMU’s Department of Paper Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Imaging is the only program in the world to have, on a single campus, pilot plants that can take a project from paper pulp to the printed page. The department was first in the nation to have a high-speed paper coater available for non-affiliated research.
