Baseball @ Towson

Towson Tigers
Record: 3-18
CAA: 0-3
RPI: 290
SOS: 228

Game times: Friday 3 PM; Saturday 2 PM; Sunday 1 PM

Perhaps this is why you don't try to resuscitate a dying program. The feel-good story of the 2013 NCAA Regionals, Towson baseball has suddenly had to face some harsh realities: A program that nearly got cut and is currently on life support with the help of the state of Maryland has suffered severe recruiting difficulties. Given a choice between playing 4 years at, say, UMBC or Maryland Eastern Shore, or rolling the dice to play for a Towson program that could be cut again at any time, few are going to choose the Tigers.

The results have not been pretty for the Tigers as a result. After a 2014 season where the team went 22-25 and just 4-13 in the CAA, the bottom has dropped out entirely here in 2015. TU has been outscored 198-105 this season against a weak schedule, and is 0-10 against teams in the top 200 of the RPI.

Pitching (7.16 Team ERA) has been the biggest weakness, as 7 different pitchers have received multiple starts but only one, Sophomore righty Kevin Ross (1-2, 4.37 ERA, 14 K's, 2 BB's) has had any consistent success. He is the only starter with an ERA under 6.00.

Offensively, Towson has not been quite as awful. Their hitters are patient, drawing 98 team walks (2nd in the CAA). No hitters with 50+ AB's are hitting .300+, however, and the team only has 7 team HR's, 2nd last in the league. There aren't any standouts worth mentioning here.

You have provided all the reasons that we should not let up and take these guys lightly. This is the type of team that can bite you in the arse. We need to keep our heads on straight and take nothing for granted.

Hey, I gave them credit for their patience at the plate didn't I? lol.

Our starters need to get ahead of their hitters with first pitch strikes. We've been prone to allowing walks for much of the season so that will be the key to a sweep for us; force their hitters to put it in play.

Will you be betting your mortgage on UNCW?

Haha. I won't be doing much gambling, if any. It's not really my thing. Well, it totally would be but I'm scared I wouldn't be able to stop so I just decide it's better if I never do it. Regardless, I'm going there to participate in a nearly 200 mile relay race supporting fallen law enforcement officers on the federal, state, and local level across the country. I'm on the CG relay team.

Very cool man! How many miles do you have to complete for your leg?

About 13. It's the Baker (CA) to Vegas race. Starts in the desert and makes it's way to the city over about 15-18 hours. Up and down the mountains and everything. Fun times. It's good times.

Baseball Preview: Back To Conference Play For The Diamond Hawks
Baseball | 3/27/2015 9:08:00 AM | Tom Riordan

TOWSON, Maryland – The Seahawks return to conference play this weekend beginning on Friday when they visit Towson for a three-game series at Schuerholz Park.

All three games will be audio streamed on the Seahawk Digital Network at UNCWsports.com.

UNCW stands at 3-0 in the league after sweeping Northeastern at Brooks Field last weekend in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams. The Seahawks captured a 10-5 win in the opener and then rallied for a 4-3 win on Saturday to win the series. UNCW followed the come-from-behind win with a 15-1 rout in the series finale as both Gavin Stupienski and Joe Berton homered twice as part of UNCW's 10 extra base hit attack.

Towson is coming off a rout itself as the Tiger whipped Delaware State, 20-7, earlier in the week. The Tigers are 3-18 overall and 0-3 in the league after being swept by preseason favorite College of Charleston on the road.

In mid-week action, the Seahawks topped longtime rival East Carolina, 4-2. Chris Gaffney belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the second inning to erase an early 1-0 deficit for the Seahawks. Whitman Barned (4-0) picked up the win in relief and Jared Gesell picked up his second save of the season.

The Seahawks lead the all-time series 34-16 after sweeping a rain-shortened two-game set last season at Brooks Field.

Projected Rotations
UNCW: Nick Monroe (1-1); Ryan Foster (2-0); Evan Phillips (1-0)
Towson: Austin Clark (0-4), Kevin Ross (1-2); TBA

RE: Baseball @ Towson
It's kind of weird to think that, today, we're trying to get our first road win of the season. Luckily Towson isn't exactly the kind of atmosphere we faced in Tallahassee. For their last home game (a 12-0 loss to UMBC), their paid attendance was 123. Their high for the year was 171 against NJIT.

I hope our hitters don't get over anxious with the short left & right field fences. Just put a good stroke on it guys!

Very few of our hitters have had this issue. Stupiensky and Connelly especially are anything but over-anxious. But we could have a couple other guys who might get trigger-happy.

Star News article about the weekend series: http://www.starnewsonline.com/article/20.../150329786

Evidently Corey Dick is expected to "miss at least two weeks with an oblique strain".

Hawks tried to make a 2-out rally happen with Golden and Stupiensky singling, but Austin grounded out. Towson threatening now in the bottom of the 1st off Monroe. 2nd & 3rd, 1 out.

RE: Baseball @ Towson
Towson grounds into an inning-ending double play, but because they went to 1st first and had to tag the 2nd runner, the Tigers picked up a run.

1-0 Towson in the top of the 2nd.
