USM Baseball Tid Bits-- Now or Never
Not in the "right" frame of mind to prepare a comprehensive preview for the upcoming weekend series, but thought I'd start a thread providing a high-level scouting report on Southern Miss...

- They come into Reckling playing their best ball of the year. Overall record is 14 - 8 - 1 (5-2 road, 3-2 CUSA, 3-2 vs. Top 100), but they've won 11 of their last 15 games, including impressive mid-week wins against both Ole Miss and Mississippi State. However, aside from those two games, they've played a very weak schedule (#224 SoS). Here's their schedule and results to date...
http://warrennolan.com/baseball/2015/sch...thern-Miss

- The strength of this team is their pitching staff, particularly their weekend starters, two of whom have ERAs below 1.50 and BAAs below .200. Overall, the staff stats are excellent: 2.18 ERA, .248 BAA, 2.3 K:BB tatio, and averaging just 2.6 BBs per game. The one thing that bodes well for us is that all three weekend starters are right-handed pitchers, as well as two of their top 3 relievers.

- As usual with a USM team, they have been very stout defensively, posting a .971 fielding percentage, their catchers have thrown out 12 of 27 attempted basestealers (44%) and allowed only 4 passed balls, and they've turned 29 double plays in 23 games. Couple with their pitchers keeping free passes to an absolute minimum, they simply do not beat themselves (unlike another team we know).

- Offensively, they have struggled to get hits (.265/.357/.374, with 12 HRs), but they've compensated by being extremely efficient at manufacturing run (averaging 5.3 runs per game, despite their low AVG). As a Senior, Connor Barron is finally living up to his Top 100 prospect status out of high school (.347/.354/.477, with 3 HRs, 8-11 SBs). They have been patient hitters, averaging better than 5 free passes a game, have struck out at a relatively low rate (under 6 Ks/game) and have been very aggressive on the basepaths (32 - 43 stolen bases, with 4 players having 5+ SBs already). Their coach appears to be a platoon and righty-lefty matchup freak, as 13 different players have started in at least 10 games, while no player has reached even 90 ABs. Consequently, we should expect to see an extreme left-handed laden lineup when McCanna and Stephens take the mound, and an extreme right-handed laden lineup when Fox pitches on Saturday.

Here's their individual and team stats through their first 23 games...

Quote:Southern Miss logoSouthern Mississippi has won at least 30 games for thirteen consecutive seasons and 28 times in the last 29 years. The Golden Eagles should be competitive again in 2015 thanks to some veterans on the pitching staff. Christian Talley (4-4, 2.67), Cody Carroll (3-2, 3.99), Ryan Milton (3-3, 3.22) and Jake Winston (3-3, 4.46) all return, and they are joined by talented freshman Kirk McCarty and transfer Cord Cockrell. USM will look to improve on last season’s .246 team batting average with Matt Durst (.277/6/42), Nick Dawson (.251/0/23), and Dylan Burdeaux (.266/3/24) the top returnees. OF Connor Baron (.246/4/20) had a nice summer and is a key to the offense. Barron spent another summer at the Texas Collegiate League and seemed to display more consistency. In addition to his impressive athleticism, Barron showed a more advanced, mature approach. He won’t be drafted in the third round again like he was out of high school, but he looks poised to put together his best collegiate season.

RE: USM Baseball Tid Bits-- Now or Never
Tonight's opposing pitcher, Jr RHP Cody Carroll (6'5", 193 lbs)...

6 starts, 1-0, 42.0 IP, 1.50 ERA, .197 BAA, 28 hits (only 2 for extrabases), 19 BBs, 6 WPs, 34 Ks

...he's averaging 7.0 IP per outing.

We desperately need McCanna to regain his form, and the offense to get off to a good start.

Tonight is disco night at the ballpark. You're supposed to wear your best bell bottoms and platform shoes. So if nothing else, we know there will be a lot of Hustle at the Reck.

I think it said Fox Sports 1 on riceowls.com, but when I checked my TV Guide, it's not on there. I don't get FS2.

We need an appearance of the "Disco Duck". Also, blowing up a bunch of disco records in the outfield would be pretty epic.

I am assuming that hair works on the associative principle? My nose and ears are making up for my head...

Thanks for the preview Walt. I appreciate your diligence in putting these together. By the way, I met you during the Stanford weekend. At the basketball games, I was sitting between Tiki and Tomball Owl. To be honest, I've significantly lowered my expectations for this team over the last 2 to 3 weeks. The poor fundamentals, drop-off in pitching, weak defense, etc. has been so painful to watch that I've been driving myself crazy with frustration. Like many of us, I think I over-estimated our potential - based on early season success. I'm now backing off on what I really expect this team to accomplish. Rather than sweating whether we host a Regional or Super-Regional, I'm going to now assume that won't happen. Instead, I just want us to target winning CUSA and try to continue our streak of 40 win seasons. Those seem like more reasonable goals, based on what I've witnessed so far. I do feel we've got lots of potential - and I'm hopeful that we'll be better come the end of the season. As a result, I can actually see us doing some damage during the post-season. Right now we're not a top 10 team. I'd like to think we're a top 25 team - one that has so much pitching talent, we have the potential to get hot and really do well come playoff time. I think following the team with these lowered expectations will help me better enjoy the remainder of the regular season.

RE: USM Baseball Tid Bits-- Now or Never
Agreed with 13th's comments about Minnewaska.

Football isn't like baseball or basketball... Your record in football is all you have. 12-1 is 12-1 and 10-3 isn't as good. Sure, there are times when someone might argue that it is, but that is merely debate.

In baseball (and basketball) the key is to get into the tournament and then play well when you are there. Certainly, having home field advantage helps, but winning matters more... and this team is capable of beating any team... anywhere at any time...

Honestly, all it takes is a few key road wins and you're in the CWS from a seemingly mediocre record. It happens every year... and our definition of Mediocre is STILL a banner year at almost any other place.

The biggest thing working against us is the large number of good Texas teams... We could easily be a 9 seed and be paired with #2 or 4 because of logistics and stay home. I'd almost rather be a traveling 2 (if that is what it takes) and get paired with #8.

Just get better, get and stay healthy and everything else will work itself out.

You're close - that's Lake Minnetonka (where many of the wealthy Minnesotans own property). Lake Minnewaska is about 2 1/2 hours west of there. We own a lake home there and commute from Katy during the summer. Lake Minnewaska is about 25 miles away from Morris, Minnesota - which is where I first connected with Tiki Owl.
