Didn't get much push against the run or the pass. Need guys to step up at DT but I'm not sure if we have a whole lot there. Outside of Pace we have unproven JUCOs and unproven young guys.
Loved the Sheakley venue. Gunnar Kiel had a very good game. He showed plenty of zip on the ball. At the end of last year, it appeared to me that he had lost velocity over the season due to injury. Was able to make all the throws today. Kiel's backup played well, but clearly not the same ability level. Yea I know he had more yards, but watch the throws. The runningbacks will be improved. IMHO, Boone played much better than Green or Williams. Boone appeared untackleable at times. Does not bode well for defense. Green needs to change his running style. His stop and go style causes momentum loss and negates his enormous size. The receivers caught about everything. Tshumbi Johnson will step right in when his time comes. The offensive line was very solid.
The defensive backfield is a work in progress. The staff has not settled on a line-up. It appears certain starters are Witty, Jones, with Carter Jacobs, Tyson, Tyler Gilbert, coleman and Pinckney in the mix. Jacobs made many solos, but watch for Pickney to win the starting corner spot. I was impressed with his length on pass coverage. He did a very good job defending Holton. Did not see enough of Murphy to make a determination on his ability. When I was watching him, Moore was throwing to another dbs receiver. Also Edwards, Stevens, and Aaron Brown did not play. Was very surprised about how small Edwards is for a free safety. Not sure what to think about Tyson.
We have size problem at linebacker. Casseus will be the mike, Leviticus Payne will play the hybrid, and Eric Wilson will probably be the other starter. Brown and Kinard will get significant burn. Brown has put on quite a bit of weight. Jenkinson will turn out to be a starter in the next year or two.
Defensive Line needs a talent upgrade other than Silverberry and pace. I would like to see Bowen flipped to the dline. I was near the sideline and was impressed with Silverberry trying to give pointers to Brazille. At halftime the new coach from Arkansas/Memphis had the absolute attention of the dline. Their eyes never left him while he was talking.
No one is ever going to mistake Geraci for Kevin Huber. Ganz was bad on kicks today. Be interested to hear what others thought.
I second the comments about the kicking. The missed extra points and field goals were not good and the punting was just bad.
Moore looked good at backup. I thought Kiel made some bad decisions but overall did well. He definitely has lost some weight. All of UC's QBS have the same size and stature. Boone looked great - he should be the # 1 RB in my opinion.
And yes, there was enough room for the fans that showed up, though they did put the overflow on the field.

Based on the way Tubs gushed over Boone, sounds like he's clinched the #1 spot. He started off saying, "We have a heck of a competition", but by the end of it he was talking about how special Boone is...

Boone certainly looked like the clear number one. His explosiveness is on a different level than our other RBs. I thought Hosey and Tion both looked good. Hosey is compact and keeps moving forward, always seeming to pick up 3-5 yards even when it doesn't look like anything is there. Tion is a little quicker than Hosey so he has the potenial to be more explosive. However, he seemed to stop and start too much and wound up with a couple no gainers that could've been 4 yards had he just let his momentum carry him. But Boone has tremendous vision and hits the hole so quick. I think there will be plenty of carries to go around for all 3 this year but Boone should be the primary back. I even thought Bobby Brown made some nice runs where we were all kind of like "Who was that?" Barring injuries, I think we could let the incoming frosh take a redshirt this year.
If Boone stays healthy and stays 3 more years I see Reggie Taylors UC career records for rushing attempts (876) and rushing yards (4,242) being blown away.
He may not have Olympic speed but he seems to get to top speed real fast. According to my UC Physics Profs on is velocity and the other is acceleration. Man I don't understand how it took half a season to get him on the field.
I understand, like most young backs his blitz pickup need improvement.

Honestly, I'd rather have acceleration than top speed. In general, how often does a football player use top end speed? Even receivers, acceleration and deceleration seem like they would be greater assets. I want a RB that see the hole and hits it hard and fast. Heck, I can remember a big run by Boone last year where he was caught from behind. I like how decisive Boone is. Tion could use some of that. He's way too big to dance around like he does.
For anyone who attended the official tailgate prior to the game, any new takeaways on tailgating options aside from being able to grill on top of the garages now?
Speaking of the exclusive tailgate the food was excellent with a menu of:
Yogurt Parfait
Egg frittata
Sausages
Bacon
A breakfast potato dish
Donuts on a Stick
Mimosa’s
TT and Bohn gave a brief talk.

The O looked good but then again they were playing our D.
Boone had great runs. Morrison looked great. Gantz was horrible with missed PAT and several FG's. Geraci was weak punting. New Special Teams Coach better get his $hit together.
Gantz had a great spring outside of Saturday. Our D was going to look bad with several projected starters not playing in the spring game.

I did notice Gantz was limping several times on Saturday. Wonder if his relatively poor kicking was injury related.

The only tailgating announcement by Bohn at the "Official Tailgate" was "For the coming season open flame tailgating will be allowed here (University Garage top floor). I think it is $350 and you get 2 parking spots. I did not pay that much attention since food is free in Club Seats and Suites.
That said we do enjoy tailgating at Oxford every other year. Memphis was good tailgating in the lots near Liberty. Pittsburgh was always too damn cold. At WVU you have to fear they will steal your food if it was late in the month and they were out of food stamps.

He has all the tools to do it. The only thing that will prevent him from shattering the records will be the fact that he will share the carries with a couple backs this year and a couple more in the future (Boose/Hollaman). We also will also throw the ball a lot.
