Comparing the records
Two coaches took over programs for down that they had to resort to using FB players to supplement the squad. Here is how each did after 9 years:

One coach:

YR WON LOST
1 11 19
2 13 19 CBI
3 18 14
4 19 16 NIT
5 26 9 NCAA 32
6 26 11 NCAA 16
7 22 12 NCAA 64
8 27 7 NCAA 64
9 23 11 NCAA 32
TOT 185 118

AVERAGE 20.6 13.1

Other Coach:

YR WON LOST
1 20 14 NIT
2 18 12 NIT
3 29 5 NCAA 4
4 27 5 NCAA 8
5 22 10 NCAA 64
6 23 11 NCAA 32
7 28 5 NCAA 8
8 26 8 NCAA 32
9 27 6 NCAA 32
TOT 220 76

AVERAGE 24.4 8.4

Excellent recovery by both.

RE: Comparing the records
Bob's record is better, but I give Mick credit for a tougher schedule (due to Big East) most years and inheriting a program in even worse shape.

RE: Comparing the records
Troll so hard...

Bob definitely got us to a higher level. We were a top 5 - 10 program in the country when during the 90's and very early 2000's, things slipped quite a bit during his last few years though.

We are more like a top 20 - 25 program now under Mick, although exactly where could be debated a bit. What can't be debated is that Mick has been outperforming Bob the last 5 years...

That is not what the numbers say.

Coach Cronin last 5:

26 9 NCAA 32
26 11 NCAA 16
22 12 NCAA 64
27 7 NCAA 64
23 11 NCAA 32

TOT 124 50 ONE S16, TWO 32, TWO 64

Coach Huggins last 5:

25 10 NCAA 16
31 4 NCAA 32
17 12 NCAA 64
25 7 NCAA 32
25 8 NCAA 32

TOT 123 41 ONE S16, THREE 32, ONE 64

One less win but 9 fewer losses and one more Round 32.

I was referencing Bob's last 5 years in West Virginia.

I believe that was 6 seasons ago. Also strongly aided by some Beilein players, DaShaun Butler being the most obvious (and their best player).

2009, 2010 season, so a little over 5 years

Butler did a lot of his development under Huggins. That team's next best players were Huggs' recruits (Ebanks, Kevin Jones). Beilein was/is a really good coach, but that team was Huggs' team.

Butler's freshman year (before Huggins came in), he shot 35% from 3, 57% from 2 with a high usage rate. He was good from the get go.

Whether it was Huggins team or not, since it has been his program to recruit to solely, they have not been nearly as good as that team was, including missing the tournament the last 2 seasons. Which corresponds to how his program was being run during the last few years he was in Cincinnati (although they were never so bad as to miss the tournament while he was here).

RE: Comparing the records
Right now the program is pretty much in the same place it was when Huggins was dismissed. I would like to get back to the point of being a top 15 program. Arena renovation is probably the missing piece of the puzzle holding back recruiting and fan base growth.

Comparing Huggins to Cronin without any context is foolish. Huggins had a new arena and much better roster situation, Cronin had no players, an old arena, a divided fan base, and the most difficult conference in the nation. During the Huggins years, UC was upwardly mobile or at the least static in conference affiliation while during the Cronin years UC has went from the Big East down to American. Xavier, Ohio State, Dayton, Louisville and Kentucky are collectively better today than they were 25 years ago, making recruiting and regional appeal more challenging. College basketball was probably the most popular sport in Cincinnati outside of Reds baseball for most of Huggins tenure, today college basketball falls behind NFL, MLB, and college football on both the local and national radar.

Once again, I still want a top 15 program but this isn't 1992, 1996, or even 2000. Get Cronin a nice arena, a new locker room, and watch the results continue to tick upward.

Bryant and Flowers, as well. Like you said, that was Huggins' team.

RE: Comparing the records
I like every thing about Mick, he has done an unbelievable job getting this program going forward, but I'll be honest with you, I worry whether Mick can get top 25 or top 50 recruits or even top 100 recruits consistently to come here. I'm sure willing to give him more time, but eventually UC needs to start getting a few 5 star kids if we want to consistently be top 10.

Counting the Mike Williams transfer, Cronin has had 4 five stars in 8 years. Extrapolated...Huggins didn't do any better than that.

Not that it matters, but how exactly can you say that? I think UC had 5-6 McDonald's All-Americans in the 90's. The only one I recall during the Cronin era is Stephenson. Transfers don't count, so that crosses White and Williams off the list.

And yet, watch the thread views and replies #'s absolutely explode. It really is mind bogging that people cannot move on from Huggins. Pathetic really.
