Watts is a move or two away from check mating this thing. If he gets the conference worked out, it's all over for football.

The release read similar to things said when coach Clark was brought on board. Bama better not spend more on a coach than Hasse because that would be fiscally irresponsible based on how they treat UAB.

Still this is a shocking amount to offer him IMO. We only offered Anderson in the neighborhood of 600-650 when he left for Mizzou, correct?

And all this "committed spending" for upgrades, travel, etc., it seems like a thinly veiled disguise to placate angry fans. While I'm happy about all this, it also makes me nervous that they are digging in and football will not come back no matter what...

No doubt this is excellent news for the basketball program. This is the level of commitment that it'll take to have a program like Wichita St. If the contract is for $1M, I would think we're overpaying for Haase. I don't doubt he could command that salary in the future (and I'm happy to see we're willing to pay a salary at that level), but I think we're overdoing it at this point.

I agree though that committing to spending this level of money means the administration has no intention of bringing back football. Now even if football is shown to be viable they can say "Yeah that's great, but we've already committed all of resources to basketball. We can't re-start football without breaking the promises we made to the basketball program."

Does anyone know where one million ranks in CUSA. In today's market, if Haase becomes a hot target of P5 schools, $1 million is still low that a lot of P5 schools will top.

But Watts is spending money right now like a cheating husband trying to convince his wife he still loves her before she kicks him out of the house.

Hopefully when we kick Watts out of the house, we will get to keep the nice shiny diamond (Haase) he bought us (his scorned wife).

This is very much in response to the bombshell documents. They think they can throw money at UAB basketball and we'll shut up about Watts, the BOT, and Football. I'm VERY glad Haase got the raise, extension, etc... but we're not shutting up!

Don't think so.

There is legislation at work that is outside Watts control and the BOT control.

I'm happy for Coach Haase. Doing this makes our basketball a bit more secure, as well.

That said, this does absolutely nothing to displace my determination to see Watts run out of office or to get football back. If they think it's that easy, they're idiots. Well, they're idiots anyhow, but this won't split the fan base.

The generous (for UAB) contract causes me to wonder if the attempt to tie BBHC Haase for a term of years may be to assure he will stay no matter what level of BB program UAB winds up with after 2015. Are they anticipating an angry coach who might feel betrayed by current administration decisions in a year or two?

hopefully they anticipate a coach who's already gotten a call or two this season as 'the guy who beat fred hoiberg' and decided to lock him down.

I doubt Hasse would have signed without some sort of assurances on the conference affiliation.

Even if we end up in an "acceptable" conference without a football team going forward, I still think we have to keep the pressure on to get football back. The damage will be significant to the school. It is time to be deperate from the UABOT or time for reform where the members are truly alumni of their school.

Echoing everyone's sentiments, this is fantastic for our program and Haase is deserving. But don't take the bait and turn this into a football vs basketball debate. This is a deliberate move to take news off Monday's revelation.

I hope we have another bomb set to deploy. And yes, Coach looks like an ISIS captive in that video. I'm pretty sure his captors made him read that statement.

Finally, a contract extension is worthless if conference affiliation in basketball is reduced. It is a misdirection move--leading us to believe we are all-in on basketball, but if we downgrade our league affiliation, Haase will leave after a tournament run and we will replace with an ersatz coach in an ersatz league.

Do not relent. FIRERAYWATTS.

Where was the announcement for the BOT Athletic committee meeting for this decision? I am on the notify list and nothing was sent out. Strange.

This is the same BOT who approved short a contract extension with no pay raise just 2 months ago. Now do you believe this is more PR motivated than simple reward?

RE: UAB announces new long-term contract for Men’s Basketball Coach Jerod Haase
Watts PR team is trying to deflect...Watts no longer speaks to the stakeholders, he speaks exclusively to the general public.. He want those who believe UAB football is a drain on resources to believe his comment..

“Coach Haase is a rising star in college basketball, and we want him and his staff to take UAB to unprecedented levels of success,” Watts said. “Our investments in the program to reach and sustain excellence and win championships, along with the continued support of donors, will make these priorities a reality and bolster all of our athletic programs.”

That statement basically says Basketball will bolster all UAB athletic programs in the future not football. I am happy Coach Hasse will be our coach, that is good for UAB basketball, but I believe the AD in UAB's case the acting AD usually make these type of announcements not the schools President.
Watts PR firm is working its butt off trying to show Watts doing something positive even at the expense of a well respected UAB Coach with PLENTY of integrity, the hope is by being seen with someone UAB faithful honor and the casual fan admires that picture makes Watts look human and likeable.
The Trustees will approve this contract quickly.. in order to put a positive spin on the BOT actions as being pro UAB ATHLETICS and continue to attempt to control the story as much as possible.

This is excellent news all around.

When (not if, but when) the crapulent worm named Ray Watts is removed from office, football will return. The answer to every complaint about the next president's athletic (or Honors, or really any undergraduate) spending will be, "Got to fix the Ray Watts." "Ray Watts" will become a generic term for potholes, broken pipes and worn-out wiring.

Watts is paving the way for a glorious future with his boneheaded incompetence.

One right done for the UAB athletic department does not offset years of the BoT actively tearing it down.

The thing is... aside from an unlikely run in the C-USA Tournament, and a lone upset win in the NCAA's... people on this board were ready to fire Haase and look elsewhere.

With the exception of a couple weeks of March 2015, the consensus of this board was that Haase's tenure was mediocre at best.

I want to beat some to the punch and say

"Why the hell are we paying a coach ONE MILLION DOLLARS when he can't beat North Texas?"

No one was ready to fire Haase. A small minority questioned he could "get it done". He proved them wrong.

Since you don't follow basketball you might have missed the fact that UAB's improvement this year was longer than a few weeks in March.

And why was a CUSA tournament run unlikely.

Only a troll would downplay UAB,a win over Iowa State.

Go away Troll.
