RE: Hurley to DePaul??
I just happen to be in Phoenix so I have been listening to the local talking heads. They are ok with Hurley but believe he was the second choice ( I missed the name of choice number one but I did hear the wife and kids didn't want to move into the Valley of the Sun). Nobody seemed too impressed with his experience being only two years in Buffalo. ASU is not an easy job. They are a very distant second to Arizona and basketball just isn't their thing. Phoenix is a pro town and when it comes to basketball the Suns rule the roost.Time will tell.

I agree the ASU job will be a challenge. For Hurley's sake, I hope this move was not premature in his coaching career. I know the lure of a much bigger salary is very hard to pass up (would any of us pass on doubling your salary, or more?). But he is an east coast guy, and establishing a rapport with recruits, fans, media, etc. may take a while. It is hard to resist comparing Hurley to Geno in some respects. Kind of like “ready, shoot, aim,” if you know what I mean.

Capel was their first choice. He decided to stay at Duke.

Did Hurley sign a large (by MAC standards) contract and then leave without talking to his team first and then get burned because he didn't want to pay the damages specified in the contract but forgot to make that part of his negotiations with his new employer?

Did you read the article? Supposedly that is part of what pissed Hurley off. They had not even agreed to an amount and the AD leaked the new contract agreement essentially trying to pressure Hurley into signing it. They really assumed Hurley was going to stay and he apparently had those intentions until all this craziness happened after the NCAA tourney.

That might prove that paying a coach a lot of money in the MAC might not be worth it. They leave anyway. The big schools have too much money and too much prestige. The talk shows in Phoenix talk about the MAC like its minor minor minor league. I think you only have to pay these coaches enough so that they don't go to an equal or even lower conference. Thinking you can hold them in the MAC is probably pretty stupid. Maybe Kent has it right.

Geno never took a team to the tourney.

I won't use the word stupid but only an older coach like Charlie or Dambrot is staying in the MAC when the rich boys come calling. Even with these guys, I'm nor sure there was huge interest in them from the bigs...
