Can WVU do it again?
Five years ago, Kentucky had the most talented team in the nation, led by NBA stars John Wall and Boogie Cousins, but were denied a Final 4 berth by a scrappy, turnover forcing and 3-point shooting WVU team.
Can it happen again? It can, but i don't think it will.

Probably not this year. WVU is going to need to force a bunch of turnovers, high shooting % and
then need KY to play a little poorly.

RE: Can WVU do it again?
Strange, I have no memory at all of WVU going to the final 4. But I looked it up and wikipedia says WVU did go to the final 4 in 2010, so I guess its true.
I have always thought of WVU as one of those teams that usually makes the tourney and then loses on the first weekend. Guess I was wrong. Probably have them confused with Pitt.

The Mountaineers are going to need to play one hell of a game to have a chance to win. I don't expect a WVU victory. But I'm going to root like hell for one.
Who knows? Perhaps lightning will strike twice after all. Stranger things have happened.

Probably in FB too, but sadly no National Championships. They may be the winningest FB program without one. More reason to hate Pitt. Maybe one day.

Nobody in their right mind should pick WVU to win this game. That said, nobody in their right mind picked us to beat Kentucky in 2010. Although Thursday cannot get here fast enough, I love being in this position! Very proud of our basketball team and program!

The thing that facilitates upsets in the NCAA tournament are (a) it's a single game, not a series, and (b) the game is just 40 minutes long, so one hot stretch by a weaker team or cold stretch by a stronger team and the weaker team can win.
I think WVU has about a 25% chance to win. Not that bad of a chance.

WVU is the winningest program without a national championship in both football and basketball.
WVU went to the Final Four in 1959 too, losing the national championship game to California 71-70. Jerry West was named the tournament MVP, even though the Mountaineers lost.

Jerry West .... I guess God punished him for being the most talented small guard ever as well as a babe magnet by putting him on more championship losers than anyone, ever.
IIRC, he's also the only NBA Finals MVP to come from the losing team as well.

If you call being immortalized by the NBA as their logo punishment, then you're right.

If you're implying that he was the only person in the NCAA Championship Game to win the MOP on a loser, then you'd be wrong, [H]Akeem Olajuwon was the MOP of the 1983 Final Four. He also knew about losing at a championship level, suffering three championship round losses in four years, including the 1986 NBA Finals.

RE: Can WVU do it again?
There is a lot of revisionist history going on with this game and 2010. That Kentucky team was nowhere near as good as this year's team. And that WVU team was a heck of a lot better than this year's team.
WVU was a 2 seed and came into that game with Kentucky at 30-6.
This year WVU is a 5 seed with a record of 25-9.
Kentucky was more flawed in 2009-10 and had a couple of losses too.
And why is nobody talking about how Kentucky beat WVU in the tournament the very next season?

RE: Can WVU do it again?
Kentucky this year, while an NBA D-League team (in more than one way, wink-wink), has overachieved and that 2010 team was the best in the tournament.
And I agree that WV today is not so good.

WVU only got the high seed in 2010 because they won the Big East tourney to get the autobid. Had the Mountaineers fallen short in the BET, their seed would have been about the same as it is this year. Butler was clutch down the stretch. It's a pity he blew out his knee in the Final Four.
Also, the 2010 game was an Elite Eight game for a spot in the Final Four. The 2011 game happened in the round of 32, which doesn't quite hold the same level of importance.
But as far as this year's team being better than the 2010, that's open to debate. The only thing that isn't debatable is that this year's team is more polished. But the 2010 team had just as much talent, if not more. It just wasn't as polished in 2010, since they were freshmen. This year's team has a lot experience, which was sadly lacking in 2010. So it's an apples to oranges comparison.
