Nice, thanks for the link. Disappointing time for Ross.

As an aside, it is very pleasing to see that the opinion on Rice football is changing. A conference championship in 2015 might really push Rice over that edge.

The times, they are a changing. Let's keep it up and earn a bit more respect next year. Positive results like this will only bring in better recruits and make guys hungrier to produce better results every year.

Kind of incredible that little ole Rice University's starting corners 2009-2014 were 4.3 40 guys. Lots of big name programs haven't had one 4.3 corner in that time span.

Just thought you guys may be interested to know that both Jordan and Bryce trained with the same trainer that Phillip trained with last year in Florida. They got there at the beginning of Jan and trained until the second week in March. I'm glad they did so well!

A couple of notes from CBSsports.com - both mentioning good results from Covington and Taylor, but no mention of Callahan.

Thanks for the links. A couple of observations:
1. Eric Rowe (Utah) was heavily recruited by Rice.
2. When I think of TCU's 4-2-5, I think of blistering speed. How interesting then that their best LB and safety are not relatively fast (Dawson -LB -4.78 and Hackett -S -4.72)

They play fast because they're exceptionally well-coached. Never had a glut of phenomenal athletes, though they have had some fast guys (Verrett and Hughes come to mind).

Best corner (White) coming out this year is also not particularly fleet of foot (4.63 40). (FWIW, we offered and recruited White in the class of 2009 (same class we signed Bryce))

Most of TCU's pure speed guys are on offense, actually

They also play fast because they're on the move at the snap. They don't stand there flat footed. Their read and react times are very fast, probably because a lot of it is predetermined. How they coordinate that much movement is amazing to me. As you said, well coached.

I think we've gotten better in that regard under this DC that we were previously.

Charlie Campbell breaks down the first five rounds of the upcoming NFL Draft, with updates and changes. Saw that they had Covington originally to be drafted by the Falcons, but changed it and moved him down to the Seahawks, both in Round 5.

Round 5

167. [Image: seahawksb_logo.gif]Seattle Seahawks: Christian Covington, DT, Rice [Image: Rice_logo.gif]

The Seahawks fortify their defensive line.

Covington recorded 20 tackles with 3.5 tackles for a loss, one pass batted and 2.5 sacks through the first six games of 2014. His season ended early because of knee surgery to repair a dislocated kneecap. He probably should have returned for his senior year, but he entered the 2015 NFL Draft. Covington was a First-Team All-C-USA pick in 2013. The sophomore had 51 tackles with 9.5 tackles for a loss and four sacks. It was the second-straight good season for him as he had 43 tackles, eight tackles for a loss, five sacks, one forced fumble and a pass batted in 2012.

Pick change; previously Deontay Greenberry, WR

146. [Image: falconsb_logo.gif] Atlanta Falcons: Robert Myers, G, Tennessee State [Image: TennesseeState_logo.gif]

The Falcons let go of Hank Blalock, so they could use more competition at guard.

Myers is a big blocker who looks like he could develop into a possible starting guard. Myers has power and can move defenders at the point of attack. He had a quality performance at the Combine in the field drills.

Pick change; previously Christian Covington, DT

Every objective analysis I've seen notes that Christian should stay for another year at the college level. Is there any way he could come back if things don't work out in the draft?

Nope

Is it the actual act of entering the draft that negates the eligibility? Or rather the signing of an agent prior to entering the draft that does?

It's the former. They have to renounce remaining eligibility as a condition of draft entry.

ETA: A handy reference.
