UAB response to claim that decision was made before football season
UAB media relations' Jim Bakken: 'The decision was final in November after all information was garnered and analyzed.'

UAB's Jim Bakken: At UAB, as with any major organization, it is common to prepare for potential scenarios from a communications standpoint

Don't think even the most naive person would buy that garbage.

That's all they got? Weak.

What was their prepared response for deciding to keep football? How many potential scenarios did they prepare for? So far, it looks like only one.

Slight rewrite of page 9, item 7, second bullet point.

Dude, we have your script!!! I know original thinking isn't your forte (that means "area of strength," Jim), but you're going to have to do better than that.

Is that the best response the UAB Media Relations folks can come up with?

Obvious response.

HOWEVER...

The documents talk about moving the announcement from early September to after the season, which HEAVILY AND OBVIOUSLY implies the decision was already made.

They had exact dates and timelines in the documents. They had individual's responsibilities for each step in the timeline. The decision was made.
And IF the decision was not made, someone needs to ask Bakken to provide the strategy documents if they decided to KEEP football. Don't see that anywhere in these documents.

Iron City has become UAB's own version of the Green Dragon Tavern.

Someone needs to remind Jim what his mother surely told him. When you get caught in a lie it is best to fess up; telling yet another lie to cover the first one only gets you in deeper. After a while you don't remember what the truth is. Oh, ....... ding! ding! ding! ....... we have a winner.

What are they going to say when evidence comes out that this was all planned last April right before Bill Carr was told to come up with figures that "proved" that the football program was financially unsustainable? How many more reputations are going to be trashed before the real truth becomes public knowledge?

I don't think that these folks are smart enough to realize that you can't pull this kind of cr@p at a public institution without someone leaking the information because subordinates and associates hate them for what they are doing to the University they have worked so hard to build.

You have to wonder how much longer this can go on. This is like a prize fight where a boxer absorbs body blow after devastating body blow, but somehow manages to remain on his feet although he is constantly absorbing tremendous punishment. A good manager would have thrown in the towel by now, but the BOT is Watts' manager and they are far more interested their survival than his. They know that once Watts is gone, they will have to answer directly to the legislators, the media, the public and to us, so will keep him in the ring for as long as possible.

If anyone wants to know when the BOT decided it wanted to kill UAB football, go back and read the "Black Friday" report by the Joe Fine (BOT) committee. That was their opening shot, and they have been shooting at it ever since. They just had to bide their time while blocking any UAB football program progress (like no new facilities, like a good coach or like an OCS) until they had hired an agreeable UAB President to do it.

And Cajun,no one has laid a glove on the system BOT yet. They are untouched so far and feeling no pain and no threat that really might worry them. I'm fairly sure they are not concerned over any bills in the legislature since they have "friends" there who will do anything they ask.

Agreed. The mere threat of the loss of football was used by every opponent and enemy of UAB as part of their recruiting strategy from that point on (from our peers in CUSA to Troy and throughout the nation).

This is a very good post BBF. One of your best post I have seen from you. Simple and well stated.
