Fellow Bearcats fans... relax. If you were confused about this thread's intentions, just ask nicely before you start whipping your johnsons out and going crazy over an innocuous observation.

Returning to the topic, the Bearcats underachieved badly in the tournament for the last decade of the Bob Huggins era. The Final Four and 2 Elite Eight runs happened within about a 5 year span, I believe. After that, we went on a ridiculous run of 2nd (or 3rd as it is known today) round exits. 1997 and 1998 we got knocked out on buzzer beaters. In 1999, we were outplayed by a very good #6 seeded Temple team. In 2000, we lost national player of the year Kenyon Martin during the C-USA tournament.

Overall, I think Bob Huggins did a fantastic job putting a winning product on the floor. But due to a few freak circumstances and some questionable characters, I don't think we ever reached our potential.

As for the Mick Cronin era, we have basically performed as expected in the tournament. We are 3-1 as the higher seeded team and 1-4 as the lower seeded team -- basically evens out.

Yeah, if Kenyon Martin doesn't break his leg, look out.

Is UC really a final 4 team next year? Don't you need a game changer at least?

That would be great! But who's calling that? Far to many deserving teams can't get there.

They showed a stat that Nova lost in the round of 32 as a 2,2, and 1 seed 3 of the last 5 years. Worse yet 3 seed Iowa St. lost to a 14 this year after losing as a 2 seed to a 15 a few years back. I think IU lost around 7-8 straight 1st round games thru to the early 2000s. It happens.

There is a different between criticism, bashing, and review. This is a review using facts.

You consider 14 years ago a few years back?

Yes, UH has been irrelevant for a long time, next observation.

But oh well, UC has won titles and UH hasn't but guess who always gets talked about more when it come to March Madness, not even including the NC State game. 05-stirthepot

Surely. Not Houston. When you're irrelevant...you're irrelevant. Which begs the question. Why would a Houston fan have any interest in a college hoops thread? Surely there's something associated with UH you'd have reason to support! Maybe intramural bowling?

Well said robertfo. I'm not offended by the OP as I think it is a legitimate question/observation that many Bearcats fans (myself included) lament with what could've been and why the teams seemed to underachieve more times than not. I certainly expected UC to have more trips to the Sweet 16 under the Huggins era but it didn't work out that way. Welcome to the one game elimination tournament - matchups and who's hot at the right time. It's also a matter of perspective. On the one hand, UC made ONLY 4 Sweet 16 appearances, 3 E8's and 1 FF in the fourteen times that Huggins' teams got to the dance. There was also the horrific stretch of second round exits four years in a row that robertfo alluded to when UC was seeded either as #2 or #3. On the other hand, Huggins teams when to 14 consecutive tournaments between the 1991/92 and 2004/05 seasons going 20-14 overall and 20-10 as the higher seed. In those 14 tournament appearances, UC was bounced from their opening round game only twice (1993/94 and 2002/03). Is it disappointing that UC didn't make deeper runs? Absolutely. However, I can tell you many programs wished they made the tourney 14 years in a row with a shot to make a deep run in March.
