Don't forget Anthony Brooks. He made a lot of progress last season and I would be surprised if he isn't starting opposite Paris Logan.
Yeah he learned to play off the receiver 10 yards instead of 15. At least he doesn't let anybody behind him but teams can always get 5 yards with a simple out. I think one of last years freshman takes his spot this upcoming year.
If you've noticed with any of NIU's DB's (excluding Jimmie Ward), they are always playing atleast 10 yards off of the ball so don't say that it was only Brooks. Paris began doing some bump coverage from the line last year but he got burned alot.
What NIU's DB's lack in speed and overall talent, they make up for with overall coverage and insticts with getting to the ball. In the next 1-2 years we may have a DB position that is full of talented guys that can play for many P5 schools.

I'm actually a little worried about our DB's compared to most of you I guess. A reason is how our secondary got lit up by Marshalls WR's especially Shuler. It really showed what our weakness was and what we need to fix this off season and the future. I believe Coach Carey also addressed this but was hesitant in admitting it. (this is my first actual post.... Please be gentle! Lol

I think the DBs could end up being a strength of the team

That is interesting. Can you further explain how you think they will be our strength? I honestly want to know.

I know NIU struggled in the Marshall game, but a lot of that was due not just to Shuler but the freakish ability of their QB. I just was impressed with the youth at that position last year, how well they played. Smalls especially, I cannot remember when I was this excited about a true freshman, he is a star in the making.

RE: Kenny G (No not that one!...Our New Stud WR)
I would be really disappointed if the secondary is a problem next season. Paris Logan is now a senior and has been a starter for the past two seasons. He really showed a lot of improvement last season. Trust me, I hated Paris Logan the last two seasons, but by the end of the season I was impressed with how well he was playing. Same goes for Anthony Brooks. All of the true freshman that saw playing time at CB showed potential to be playmakers. A full off-season to get in better shape and learn the defense should help. At safety, Durante is gone, but to be honest he didn't live up to his hype last season. Mycial Allen and Brandon Mayes should be capable replacements along side Marlon Moore. If Deion Hallmon or Juwuan Johnson are any good, the secondary would be as deep as it gets.
If I'm worried about anything, it's that Drew Hare doesn't progress this off-season. He got the job done and lead the Huskies to their third MAC championship in five years, but he has a lot of room for improvement.

Yea, I like Smalls too. I just wanted to see how our secondary would fair against a legit WR in Shuler and see how we would handle a real good WR. Just looking forward to how our D will play this coming year. I actually started being a fan 2012 when I started school at Niu, so I'm a newbie. I just didn't have any reason to be a college football fan in the past, and when I got accepted, I was presented with a real good team. But from what I seen from 3 years, our offense seems to always be good and we are able to get pretty good recruits on the offense side but I always thought (from the short time being a fan) thought the defense really needs to get a consistent flow of good recruits every year. But it's not like they are not trying.

That is about my only major worry also, Drew Hare. This might be a season where NIU has to have a great passing game to succeed whereas in year's past, it was always icing on the cake. Kind of a different situation for Hare and the passing game, more urgency to be successful this year. Luckily he is overloaded with weapons, but that bowl game does leave a very worrisome taste in the mouth. What is even scarier is the QB depth.

I'd take Fleck and Sheldon, then Napalm and Ashford, McCareins and (Hill?), Martel and Brown/TLL then Brown and TLL over the group we have this year. Of course I do hope you're right and this group blows those other guys out of the water but I have a hard time seeing that. All said and done Fleck and Sheldon didn't have a dominant QB throwing to them. I think (hope) Drew will be a weapon to be feared this year and next.

McCareins and Hill, two NFL WRs, yeah hard to beat that but overall this years team is a lot deeper then the 2000 team. The top 2 probably aren't as good as most of the tandems you mentioned.

If Fleck was the coach we'd probably be doing that.

I like starting rumors, so here goes:
Kenny G = PJ Fleck.
