UTA's week in baseball
Not to be a homer here, but I figured this deserved its own thread. Polls are of 3-16.
3-17 vs. Texas Longhorns at Globe Life Park in Arlington
UT-Austin #14 in NCBWA poll, #17 in D1Baseball.com, #16 in USA Today Coaches, #14 in Collegiate Baseball, #21 Baseball America.
UTA heads into the ninth inning tied at 2. 'Horns score three in their half but the Mavs score three, including a 2-out, 2 RBI hit from freshman Will Olson to tie it. Mavs pitch a 1-2-3 10th. Christian Hollie leads off the 10th with a triple, and eventually comes home after a wild pitch with 2 outs for the win.
This game set a record of 4,123 to view a UTA game in Arlington.
3-18 vs. Dallas Baptist Patriots at Clay Gould Ballpark
Dallas Baptist #24 in NCBWA, #26 in USA Today Coaches, #18 Baseball America.
UTA trailed 3-2 after five complete and 5-3 after seven. A bullpen collapse against one of the nation's best hitting teams saw four straight runs for the Patriots lead to a 9-3 loss. I was worried about this game due to the hangover effect from the previous night.
3-20 vs. UC-Santa Barbara Gauchos at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium
UC-Santa Barbara #26 in NCBWA, #16 in D1Baseball.com, #22 in USA Today Coaches, #16 in Collegiate Baseball, #19 Baseball America.
UTA scored first, UC-B answered. UTA retakes the lead only to give it up in the shutdown inning in the sixth. The Gauchos fail in their shutdown inning as Travis Sibley hit a a bases-loaded, bases clearing, two-out double. A few batters later, Jackson Morris hits a two-out, two-RBI single. The lead would hold as the Mavs would give up two in the eighth.
3-20 vs. UC-Santa Barbara Gauchos at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium
Game time 1 PM. Central.
Minimum two wins against ranked teams is just amazing. Good feelings in Arlington after UT, regardless of what happened later. A amazing finish against a big name at home (sorta).
Still impressed with the two-out offense for UTA. They have won a couple of SBC games due to that and did it in both wins against ranked clubs. They didn't do that last year. They hit a lot, but teams were able to scatter the hits in non-conference and we were just horrendous in non-conference games. The most amazing thing for us Mav followers is this is being done with a lot of frosh.
We expected the stadium renovations to have a positive impact on recruiting. TCU built a brand-new stadium a few years ago and when DBU brought their baseball to DI, they invested heavily in theirs. We had to make a move just to compete locally and it seems to have had a great impact early on. Horner at DBU is a great facility and slowly, Clay Gould is getting there. I think for fans, DBU is better, but for players, The Gould is superior.
We get another shot at DBU in May and host TCU (#1 in some polls, top three in all) twice in March and April.
The UC-SB game is big because the RPI formula in baseball gives bigger credence to road wins than home. It will be interesting to see if they classify the UT-Austin game as a home of neutral. Our RPI will be effected a few spots depending.
