He knew it was a strong possibility, so UL(21-13, 13-7 Sun Belt) basketball coach Bob Marlin was not shocked when he got the call saying Sam Houston State(26-8, 15-3 Southland) would be the Ragin' Cajuns' opponent Saturday afternoon (2 p.m. central) in the second round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT).
The initial thought that went through his mind when he heard, actually, was relief that his team would be able to take a relatively short trip for its next postseason game.
The bus ride from Lafayette to Huntsville, Texas, after all, is less than 250 miles — almost 200 fewer than one other possible second-round option, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
What Marlin wasn't pondering first is the fact — oh, by the way — he'll be coaching for the first time against the Southland Conference team that he used to coach.
"Great feelings," Marlin said of going back.
"It will be a little bit different being on the other side of the bench, the other side of halfcourt, but good memories there, great people.
"I feel good about what I accomplished when I left to come to UL," he added. "It was hard to drive off after we built something really special, and Coach (Jason) Hooten has done a really good job of building off that."
