It probably could have been that simple for him. But reading this ,which I remember reading a long time ago, he could have played baseball too. But I'm sure he's trained and worked very hard to build on his natural gifts.

This is silly. JustanODUFan messaged me to let me know he/she is this insider and I'm clueless. I've never initiated a message with anyone on this board to start an argument. I've got better things to do.

I get it, you are on staff. Congrats.

Not everything has to be this gut wrenching back and forth. This is a message board, not the Ten Commandments.

Anyways best wishes to Ross. Hope it works out for him.

Don't forget Breon Key!!! How many guys can say they picked off Taylor Heinicke twice and then a few months later hit a three against Kentucky in the NCAA Tournament.

Yes, JustanODUfan sends me private messages as well. I appreciate the inside knowledge you provide. Just understand none of us "know it all"

Only position I could see him playing in baseball is CF. I could see him robbing a lot of people of extra bases

And I am not sure that he didn't have the desire. More that he made a choice when he was 17/18 years old

Incorrect again HE quit HS football midseason because it wasn't his thing. Well documented on the internet.

Where do you see this as being "well documented on the internet?" I can't find it anywhere. I see an article where he played a game his Senior year and caught three passes for 126 yards and three TDs, but that's about it.

Dude don't feed him.... He will message you the link to some article that is OLD. He'll tell you that 30 guys played d1 basketball and football at the same time.... And when you prove his numbers to be grossly inaccurate, he'll get mad.

Save yourself the time and energy and ignore him. Richard gave up football in high school to concentrate on basketball and track (not sure how much he had to do to concentrate on track..... Pretty sure he probably just laced them up and out jumped everyone)

He did show you a bunch of guys that played basketball and football, you just chose to ignore them.

Actually I responded in kind to each single one. If you choose to read all of my post you would see that I also indicated that had Ross not redshirted as a freshman, he probably would have played football as a 5th year like several of the people on his list.

His case was "a ton of athletes played both sports in college".

He listed 16 (including Key who he recently added).
Of the 16 there were a couple I never heard of so I chose not to comment on those and gave him the benefit of the doubt that they did play both sports for 4 years
Of the remaining only 2 or 3 played both sports for all 4 years
The rest either quit one of the sports after playing for 1-2 years OR did not play their second sport until their first was complete.

A ton is more than 16 people, which was his words not mine.

But I digress, because my point was very few play both sports at the same time. Which is why I indicated that had he not redshirted as a freshman, he probably would have played football his 5th year.

Let me know what part of that doesn't make sense to you and I'll clarify it even more

Whether or not a guy plays both sports for all 4 years or plays them for 1, 2, or 3 years doesn't change the point that he has and can be done. Many guys that played basketball and football sat out their senior or junior year basketball for draft prep; not that they couldn't handle playing both sports. Even more of them play football and then baseball in the spring.

Dude we're just going to have to disagree on this. I see a large difference between the student who can balance two sports that overlap and make that commitment for four years (Gonzalez) and the student who plays on sport for 4 and then plays one for 1 (Paulus). You don't have to agree with me. I think as former student-athletes, we both can agree it was hard enough balancing our sport and classes.

RE: Richard Ross Participating in ODU's Pro Day
The point of this debate has been completely lost. I believe the point was that someone argued that Ross should have played football and basketball here. He would not have been nearly as effective in either sport if he were splitting time. He is a freak athlete, but he never really developed into a basketball player--despite spending all of his time focusing on only one sport. Imagine how stunted his progression would have been if he had split time.

Man, reading this thread, you'd think we just lost our coach and all our recruits.

Lighten up everyone.

Which has been my point from the beginning: it is difficult to play basketball and football AT THE SAME time at the D1 level. I am not disagreeing with you... That would be R8R.

well this thread has certainly been historical... it was enough to awaken T-mac to the csnbbs safe harbor we've enjoyed over the years

that being said, I'd wonder if the IP addresses of those two are not exactly the same.
