TBR Flagship Question
After a cursory look around the TBR website (trying to find info on the Nike contract extension), I noticed that Memphis is designated as the flagship of the system. IIRC, TN has two public systems - UT and TBR. Obviously, it's not a fair comparison as UT has its' own system while Memphis is lumped in with everyone else. However, seeing as how people on these forums make a HUGE deal out of flagship status, what does it really mean for the UofM? Do they get more funding? Preferential treatment? Please and Thank You.

RE: TBR Flagship Question
We're actually very lucky to be the TBR flagship...

Quote:But over the years, it seems the university has always strived to be part of greater things, and one of the strangest incidents in its 100-year history took place back in 1951, when Memphis State College — as it was called at the time — almost became the University of Tennessee. "MSC" would have changed to "UTAM" — which just sounds odd to me.

Think about UAB athletics...that would be us

UT won't even allow UT-M or UT-C to have FBS football

RE: TBR Flagship Question
The way I understand it, we are considered a "flagship" because of the number of programs/degrees we offer, and the levels offered within them.

Funding is determined by graduation rates....which is why there was a big push last year to retain students, and an even bigger push to get adult students who dropped out to come BACK & finish their degrees when they're only a semester or two away from their goal.

Being the "flagship" doesn't get us any more $$ - our numbers, however, which is tied into why we're the flagship, does.
