RE: Parrish article on Gregg Marshall
He makes it (the Memphis thing) sound like some either/or.
Sure, Memphis currently isn't exclusively charter but could it go back to full charter?
I don't see why not. Plus, if you pay a guy $1.85mm instead of $2.65mm, you have a little extra coin for niceties.

For the right coach I guarantee the boosters would subsidize the budget for charter flights. I wonder if the budget "cutbacks" for hoops are actually the result of the inverse....boosters speaking with their wallets about their dissatisfaction with the current situation.

This has become a religion from some of you guys. Geez! Projecting much? Even in the article he named Texas, North Carolina and Indiana as possibilities

RE: Parrish article on Gregg Marshall
Good read. It does make me question Memphis as a coaching destination. Cost of living is relatively good, quality of life is probably a little below average, but the fan base overall always seems divided. The city is divided racially and economically, the college sports fanbase is divided between U of M and a bunch of SEC schools, and U of M fans seem to be always divided on expectations vs reality and optimism vs pessimism. I'm not saying that we cannot hire a very good coach, but can anyone read this article and really argue that G. Marshall would be happier (or even happy) here.

Any underachieving program is going to have a fractured fanbase. The problem for Memphis is the de-emphasis of basketball.

Define "de-emphasis".
If you mean the AD and key boosters don't worship the men's basketball coach like they did Calipari and give him every conceivable resource while ignoring the football program during the DeAngelo/Wimprine years....which resulted in the disrepair and collapse of football from 2008 until 2012....and was angrily echoed in West's exiting rant....which then led to the disastrous Porter seasons...then YES, it has been "de-emphasized" in order to save the entire athletic department.
After watching Louisville and Cincinnati invest in their football programs and gain major conference affiliation in 2005, MEMPHIS finally grasped the hard truth that football - NOT roundball -drives the athletic revenue bus.
So some monies have been spent and WILL CONTINUE to be spent on facilities, coach's salaries, and an IPF to pursue a P5 bid. Basketball is nice, it's entertaining; but FOOTBALL IS KING. Embrace that concept, that stark reality. Most of the deep pocket boosters have.
So maybe instead of saying basketball is de-emphasized, perhaps it's more accurate to simply say football is finally getting the resources it has been lacking since the early 90's.

... at the expense of basketball. Seems like you were able to define that well enough, you didn't need to ask him to do it.

that's fine and all, but louisville and cincy didn't downgrade basketball to upgrade football. they showed commitment to both, and that is what we need to do. we may ramp up football, but if basketball falls apart, i guarantee some big 12 schools will use it against us. we don't need to give them any reasons not to want us. the school and money folks that can should do everything to ensure football becomes relevant and basketball stays relevant.
