Cincyboilermaker has us scouted better than a genuine uc fan could.

By and large, I think the Purdue crowd is taking this game very seriously and there's plenty of concern and respect over there.
Aside from the on WKRP jab, I didn't see any flames over there.

RE: Purdue Board
Reading through the board someone referenced UC as being thuggish and one of the UC?PU fans set the record straight. Very glad to see that.
Because UC and PU both have fine engineering schools there is a lot of crossover of people attending one for UG and the other for grad school.

RE: Purdue Board
Still with the "thugs"? Sometimes I wonder why we "cleaned things up" if people aren't going to notice.
Yes, that was facetious, but it ticks me off. We payed our debt with those down years following the Mick hire, and some choose to still penalize us.

Trivia: the word "facetious" contains all of the vowels, in order....(add "ly" and you can include the "and sometimes y")

Two years ago I was up in NEO visiting the in-laws during the start of the tournament. We were watching UC play when one of my wife's uncle made the comment, "You know, I could never really support UC completely because they always have a bunch of thugs".
I asked him what he meant by the comment and explained how Mick runs his program and Huggins hasn't been here for a long time. His comment to me was that UC always has "inner city kids with tattoos". I reminded him that even his beloved Irish and Buckeyes have inner-city kids with tattoos-- in fact nearly everyone sans BYU, Wisconsin, Gonzago and Butler have teams comprosed mostly of inner city kids with tats today He thought about it and didn't say anything further other than to say I was right. I know deep down I didn't change his mind and he still sees UC as a thuggish program.
I hate it but this is just the way it will probably always be. The way I see it we might as well embrace who we are.

We had no debt to pay. If people want to call us that, eff them. They're ignorant and know nothing. They called us thugs in '92 before we had any players do anything wrong. Just because we wore black and had a bunch of Jucos.
Thugs is the battle cry of the losers and wimps.
Looking forward to this match up. I think we will be up for it and ready to play. Players just can't look ahead or get awe struck thinking about the UK match up that awaits. Let's win one, and then whatever happens the UK match up is an experience and a character builder for next year.

That, UC's aggressive style and toughness. Oh, and winning.
The media always needs their black hat.
You still hear people talk about how UC graduated zero players. It's annoying as hell and they never listen when you correct them.

Every team has some questionable characters. UC seemed to have more than the average and Huggins seemed to embrace the opportunity to turn kids lives around. Sometimes it worked sometimes it didn't, but it gave UC a reputation that has been hard to shake. The baby boomer generation folks that are not UC fans will probably have the thug opinion until the they die. I think younger generations won't feel that way.

The fact is UC under Huggins scared White America just like Georgetown, UNLV, and the Fab 5 at Michigan. The Liberal Press portrayed Huggins as an exploiter of young black men and the Conservative Press portrayed him as a win at all costs coach who recruited thugs and criminals. There are some things I don't like about Huggins however he is not a phony, like so many other coaches.

I heard the interview with Nick VE last week where he discussed his recruitment. Said Steve Moeller sold kids on all coming from similar backgrounds...single parent, inner city, possibly Juco because of grades...kids felt comfortable with one another because of that. They had a model when they started building that team.

Because the graduation rate still royally sucked, and there was a never-ending parade of stupid from players who didn't know how to behave. UC paid its stiff price to clean it up but we still pay in the arena of public perception. Good reason to think twice before embracing coaches who win but degrade image.

Murph, yes, I agree we got the short end of the stick on that. If Xavier led the battle cries of b!tching against us, that we did SOMETHING right. My only thing would have been, I would have preferred to see some of the off-the-court stuff more penalized (like in-season suspensions, not the meaningless ones during the Summer).
But, no matter where one stands on the issue, I think EVERYONE should agree that we definitely don't deserve the "thugs" crap anymore, based on what NZ did.

I'm looking forward to the game. Chad Brendel did a breakdown, and concluded the two teams are eerily similar. Will be a good one.
