Today's game was lost when
we didn't back off pressure after tying game with 40 seconds to go. Josh kept gambling with pressing double team traps and it cost us. You ALWAYS play straight up D when you have tied the game with under a minute to go. You get a stop and have last possession shot to win game or they hit and you get a chance to tie.
Didn't see this mentioned anywhere else. No one in media picked up on it. If mentioned previously I will delete this thread.

Noticed the same.
Just don't understand the mentality.
Our guys were so out of place. We still had a chance, but the 50/50 ball went to Temple for a bucket....and a bull crap mystery foul!

That's coaching 101 to back out of press once you tie and clock is such that you can get a stop and hold to last shot.

RE: Today's game was lost when
I think our press suffers when KJ is playing (which is always it seems) because his conditioning is so bad he can't press, play D, and run the O at once. He always seems out of position during the press and either fouls or his guy gets loose and they get a 2 on 1 vs our big guy.

But it got us back in game today. Just have to know when to get out of it.

Obviously, CJP failed that class

I said the same thing to my son, and I didn't coach past high school church ball. Simple concept, but not for Boy Wonder.

Expecting any sort of common sense basketball strategy from Pastner is an exercise in futility.
Just sit back and enjoy the long bumpy ride to irrelevance.

Another lesson learned. Josh's coaching tuition is costing our boosters a ton of money.

I don't even mind the pressure D, but Shaq in his typical overzealous, ultra-spastic defense ran past his man and couldn't recover....which allowed Temple to cruise down and get in position to score.
Again, Temple was lucky to get the 50/50 ball.....but still.
I'm a Shaq fan, but his ball IQ is lacking!

Pressure D had everyone out of position for last defensive possession.

No offense to Kedren, but should it take a whole season to get into shape?

Well that and it didn't seem like he went diving after that ball 100% at the end. If he goes on the floor for it the instant its loose, he gets it.
Oh well. The season is over and that was probably a fitting end to end.

Sorry...but, plenty of things to be critical of in this game or really any game...but the pressure late...
Resulted in a turnover that allowed Memphis to tie the score and resulted in a loose ball that was a free for all that unfortunately Cummings came up with. It was within an inch of being a second consecutive turnover and Memphis ball very late in a tie game.
Criticize the coach for our kids not coming up with that loose ball, or playing a seven man rotation, or any of a thousand criticisms, but this one, based on watching yesterday, seems wrong.

Down the stretch, Temple won 50/50 balls, Temple made FT's and we didn't. We also missed multiple wide open looks from the outside.
But anything to blame 'coaching strategy'.
I'm done with JP but this game showed our players are just not that good. I blame the coach for not having better players.

This.
We have 2 or 3 guys who are "Memphis good" - Burrell, Nichols, and Crawford. Shaq and King have their moments.
We had 4 pgs on the roster to start this season. 1 already transferred, 1 will probably transfer after the season, 1 doesn't know if he is going to commit to basketball this offseason, and 1 was sacking groceries. In a city loaded with high school guards and Josh can't find a floor leader. Amazing.
We'll have some decent pieces to build around next year, but it really wont matter much if we don't have a guy who can run whatever offense it is that we run (usually a guard dribbling out top, pats his head, big comes and sets a half ass screen, all while the shot clock is running out). Maybe Josh will get some new flash cards and run some different sets. We also need some guards who can defend on the perimeter, but I wont hold out much hope on that as we haven't had those since Calipari was here.

Evidently what should have happened is pretty conventional wisdom in coaching circles. Probably for good reasons.

RE: Today's game was lost when
I'll leave the blaming and finger-pointing for all the "experts" on the board and will only say that:
(1) It seems to me that there are advantages and disadvantages to every strategy, and
(2) I am extremely proud of our team for the all-out effort they gave in that game (and most every other game this season). No shame in losing a close game to Temple - plenty of shame in trashing our players.
