OT: What D-1 Basketball team is the equivalent of the your FBS football team?
I hope the topic makes sense... but take your favorite FBS football team... what would be the D-I basketball equivalent of that team.

Me, for example:

OHIO STATE FOOTBALL: Basketball equivalent UConn Basketball.
Reason: Both have won titles recently with different head coaches. Both are contenders most years (in the past 20 years at least). Both had harsh NCAA suspensions which in hindsight seem a bit too harsh compared to recent on-goings. Both programs have been accused of being a really good program in a non-competitive league. Both have produced huge amounts of pro players.

UCONN FOOTBALL: Basketball equivalent: UMass Basketball.
Had one really good run with one really good coach... fairly irrelevant since. Been a major loser of conference realignment. Program with a fairly high ceiling but has been years since it came close.

Yours?

NC State Football = OK State basketball maybe? Produced some damn good guys but trouble being in a league with Kansas basketball (FL State football). I've always considered NC State basketball a little stronger... just on the cusp many times + a modern title.

Ok, we did beat UConn last year. 04-cheers

My comparison might be a little exaggerated, but Army football (outside of 1996 and a FEW decent years) has been pitiful.

As for Army basketball, well, ONE winning season in 30 years says it all. Burnside must be running the b-ball program.

No offense, but I see no correlation between OSU football and UConn men's basektball.

OSU is old guard. UConn is new blood. OSU has a huge national following. UConn is more regionalized. The OSU athletic department has more money than Jesus. UConn is a much smaller university. UConn has won four titles since 1999. Most of OSU's national championships came prior to 1968, although they have won two in the past 15 years (2002 and 2014).

If I am going to play along with your game I would say the basketball equvalent to OSU football is Kentucky, UNC or maybe UCLA.

Agreed, and this is not a knock at all,on what Uconn BB has accomplished. OSU FB has been an elite national power for almost 100 years. IMO, the only CBB comparisons would be, maybe, Kentucky, UNC, or Duke. Even these comparisons, IMO, do not do justice to the longevity of OSU's tenure as CFB royalty.

I generally agree with your post, except that UCLA's time has come and gone. I think it is time to knock them down a tier in the basketball hierarchy.

Yeah, the comparison only holds true for the last 25 years. Ohio State wasn't always the behemoth size it is now. My dad was on the soccer team there for two years in the late 60s and I have this great photo of him and my mom in front of the "horseshoe" when it really was a horseshoe and that area south of the stadium was just a grassy feidl. My grandfather's office was on the "edge of campus" now the campus has crossed the Olentangy into the farm land where he used to do his research... sorry, memory lane here.. The UConn campus is sprawling like crazy recently too.. the whole "storrs center project" is a good 25-minute walk from where my dorm was freshman year.. but UConn is in the middle of nowhere, not Columbus.

I couldn't really find another match for Ohio State football... maybe North Carolina basketball is the next best match... although I think North Carolina seems to be getting a pass for its transgressions... Ohio State got hit very hard for some seemingly minor things... Ollie has even brought up the comparison with uconn/ohio state: http://www.nhregister.com/general-news/2...ning-video I'm probably biased though being how these are the two schools I'm tied too.

Interested in hearing other people's comparisons though.

Ohio State first burst onto the scene with Chic Harley through 1916-1919. They didn't become one of the superpowers until Paul Brown won a share of the national title in 1942. Harley is a fantastic fellow, I recently read a fine book on the legend. He had a tragic post-collegiate life.

TCU football might be more like NCSU Basketball... 2 national titles but still seen as third fiddle in the state (behind Texas/Texas A&M vs behind Duke/UNC).
