“In a nod to the youngsters, the survey found that the top markets offering “the right live/work/play environment” for millennials were Nashville, Brooklyn, Portland, and Memphis.”

City of Memphis Receives Wall Street Journal Plug
As a person who lives in Nashville and lived in Memphis, both are fun cities.

Sorry, but outside of Beale, Memphis is scary, SCARY. Never seen a city with so many homes with bars on their windows.

And far as Beale goes, eh...I walked up and down it a few times, saw it, done it...kind of like Graceland - once you've seen it you can cross it off your list and move on to the next thing.

That's only because inner city Cincy gets burned down every 20 yrs, so there's not much left worth protecting.

2001 Cincy riots--biggest since L.A. 1992.

Thanks for playing, lol.

Yes. I've lived in inner city Cincinnati - for 11 years in fact. I'd move back in a heartbeat. NO comparison between Cincinnati and Memphis. None.

My favorite memory of Memphis was listening to the sound of gunfire at midnight on New Years.

Like I said, Beale is nice, but I ventured outside because I wanted to see the REAL Memphis. Scary. Very Scary.

Haha......Beale is for tourists. There is many other areas that are awesome. Hang out in Midtown and Overton Square.

Yes, Memphis has some very bad areas but it also has some of the coolest neighborhoods in the country.

You got some balls especially if you did that at night. Yes, New Years gunshots are a annual tradition.

I have no idea what part of Memphis you are writing about, because I have been hanging around Memphis for the last couple of days and it's a fantastic town. Every city has tough parts (Hell I have been through Cincinnati and it looked scary in some parts too), but I am here to tell you that they are dropping some serious coin in Memphis. The place is beginning to look better than Nashville.

Years and years ago when I was in New Orleans, I had a summer job working with a roofer. Almost every single roof I climbed on, just about anywhere in the city had bullet-holes from New Years Eve, which sounded like an hour's worth of nonstop machine guns.

About 20 yr. ago, a lady from out of state was killed near Jackson Square when a stray bullet hit her head.

Thanks for playing, lol.

I think if you're attempting to take a potshot, you should be at least in the ballpark. In this case, you've provided your readers with an enormous "swing-and-a-huge-ass-freaking-miss."

Ironic that you thanked me for playing, as if you provided anyone with anything remotely useful. You didn't.

Inner city Cincinnati is doing a lot of really nice things, but Over-the-Rhine is booming, to the point that what's happening is downright amazing.

You say it's not worth protecting, but the entire neighborhood is on the National Historic Register, and its size rivals Bourbon Street in New Orleans (some estimates say OTR is the largest historic district in the nation). Condos in the $300,000 range are normal, and just saw listings for $500,000 townhomes on REPUBLIC STREET, and a two bedroom in the new Mercer for $500,000 - a phenomena whose significance would be lost on those who don't live here.

The area has become a foodie haven. Diners Drive-ins and Dives featured an entire episode to three restaurants there just last summer. Food Network was there before that. Nick Lachey and brother's new OTR bar will be featured on a reality series this summer. New bar, Half Cut was just named one of the top 100 Craft Beer Bars in the Nation. Not to mention the write ups in travel and food magazines:

All I know is that I went to a bar in Memphis and the owner had to unlock the door. Went to a neighborhood bar and listened to the locals rip the city. Then I heard Beale Street had armed police scouting from rooftops on New Year's Eve. My brother did work there and said shopping center parking lots had police presence in towers. Then there were all those bars on the windows of homes.

Sorry. Memphis. Is. Freaking. Scary. And I'm someone who embraces the inner city.

Okay.

"The Cincinnati riots of 2001 were a series of civil disorders which took place in and around the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood of downtown Cincinnati, Ohio from April 9 to 13, 2001. The riots were the largest urban disturbance in the United States since the 1992 Los Angeles riots."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cincinnati_riots_of_2001

And guess what? Neither Cincy nor Memphis nor New Orleans particularly scare me, and if you have any common sense they shouldn't.

And, like Cincy, gentrified neighborhoods exist everywhere.

Yes they are, but Nashville is on a different level then almost EVERY city in America. The things that have and will be done is unheard of outside of Austin. Memphis and Nashville are totally different, which is great for the state. Both have a lot to offer, and make for a great road trip for people interested in visiting TN. I love both cities. Nashville is my home and Memphis is my home away from home.

The Memphis music scene is much more diverse than Nashville's and it includes Country music (which is all that Nashville has). When Memphis complets its renovation of the downtown areas and gets the Blues, Soul, Country and Rock and Roll music crowds from all over the Country converging on the City in large numbers; this place is going to be ridiculous. There are tons of untapped things in Memphis that are just unbelievable. The work that they have done here is very impressive.

lol such a beta male. I bet you get so awkward around the homeless people there who beg for cash that you immediately open up the 'ole pocketbook to avoid an uncomfortable situation.

In all seriousness, I do a lot of work around that area for my company and if you avoid appearing like a victim and stay clear of the areas where you KNOW you shouldn't be (the target rich environments as my boss says) you can avoid 90% of the headaches that come with living/visiting around an urban environment.

Completely wrong. Nashville has what's considered the best rock scene in the US. It is very diverse musical city and with Memphis create an incredible musical area.

Memphis has a soul that is so unique that you either "get it" or you don't. Those that "get it" really enjoy it while those that don't can sometimes be miserable while they are here.

That's just the way it is and it no longer bothers me when folks like BearcatsUC don't have the capacity to understand it.

Many Memphians have learned to just move on without apology. If you don't "get it", there are hundreds of cookie cutter cities around for you.
