Scientists consider new name for term 'Climate Change'
http://www.newyorker.com/humor/borowitz-...ate-change

The term climate change isn't getting it done so this (SATIRICAL) article suggests some new names instead.

Among the new suggestions...

you will be burnt to a crisp and die
your cities will be ravaged by tsunamis and floods
earth will be a fiery hellhole incapable of supporting human life

and my favorite

your future will involve rowing a boat down a river of rotting corpses

We had climate change every year in NY when I was a kid: summer, fall, winter, spring.

Hmmmm, Every time I'm up there it's Winter, Spring, Fall.....If You got 3 weeks of Summer You were doing Good. I like to froze to death at Wescott Beach state park on Lake Ontario and Alexandra Bay in the start of August on two different years up there.
I spent several Easter Spring Breaks with snow on the ground as well as snowy Thanks Giving weeks.

Global warming has been going on for 1.4 billion years evidently.....

Al Gore will want to blow up the sun now...or tax it.

Quote:A new study out of Denmark found that fluctuations in the Earth’s orbit around the sun, called Milankovitch cycles, have been causing periods of dramatic, short-term global warming for at least 1.4 billion years.

Fluctuations in Earth’s orbit are even behind the long-term warming of today’s climate, conclude researchers.

While they acknowledged that greenhouse gases are the immediate dominating force changing Earth’s climate today, they noted that on a larger scale the way our planet revolves around the sun is the ultimate control knob over the climate.

I grew up just outside NYC and we could swim June through early September. Summer temps in the 80's is nice, unlike Dallas where it's 105 every day.

What's the name for taking 135 years of records and pretending it is a significant enough sample size to judge the "climate change" of something that is 4.54 billion years old?

ERC, you really need to read that article before you post it. Those changes in temperature occur over the spans of hundreds of thousands of years. We're far outpacing that due to CO2 production/a host of other issues.

Please, just read the actual sources because there is no debate outside of the political arena.

Except there is no evidence to suggest that any of those hyperbolic projections is accurate.

That's why it's called satire.

I know, but satire is more effective when there is at least some shred of potential truthfulness. Then again, perhaps this is intended to satirize the "sky is falling" folks.

The satire in this case (I believe) is based on the hyperbole about all the calamities that are supposed to happen. But there's still a shred of truthfulness is that most agree that the Earth IS warming, at least a little, which could have an impact, regardless of what is causing it.

Owl, we've had discussions on Borowitz here before see This thread for instance

And yes, this is one of those where he's going after the "Sky is falling" crowd.

I've seen Borowitz take pot shots at both sides, and as I said sometimes he's hit, sometimes he misses in his satire on both groups.

His piece on the Iran / Obama / Republican bit, I thought was pretty damn good...

This one isn't too bad.

Where as his one on "education" and Walker just didn't do it for me at all.
