Who did the best job replacing a football legend?
We asked the question about basketball, but what about football?

Is the obvious answer Tom Osborne at Nebraska?

He's definitely on the way to being in the conversation. Got to do it more than 5 years(man, can't believe he's already been there that long!).

He was there for 6 years. 53-16-1.
Same length as another guy who was at a school for 6 years who had a 60-15 record. His Name..... Larry Coker from Miami.

No doubt. Osborne beats both of them due to longevity and more titles.

John Robinson would be in the same category. Robinson did very well following John McKay, but left for the NFL rather than staying at USC long-term.

For that matter, Jimmy Johnson, though Schnellenberger wasn't at Miami nearly as long as Devaney, McKay, etc. at their programs.

yeah a good one. One thing obvious compared to the basketball- the football guys don't last anywhere near as long(I mean, Saban was at LSU for only 5 years).

Did not follow a legend.

At the time, Saban had just won the National Title and with a record 48–16 at LSU.

RE: Who did the best job replacing a football legend?
In the sorta legendary category.

Hayden Fry coached at Iowa for 20 years, went to 3 Rose Bowls. Then Fry was replaced at Iowa with Kirk Ferentz, who has lasted at Iowa 16 years and gone to 2 Orange Bowls and had 4 top 10 finishes.

Of course 16 years later, Iowa fans are still mad that Iowa did not hire Iowa alum Bobby Stoops, who was the overwhelming favorite to follow Fry at the time.
