Movies -- what have you seen lately?
Just watched "John Wick". Wow. I'm still reeling. Nothing much really groundbreaking, but one thing I found refreshing was a lack of slow motion and gimmicks like that to show off special effects or martial arts or flying bullets etc. None of that. Just slam-bang high-octane action, some of it really pretty amazing. And even more amazing, Keanu Reeves does a damn good job. Well worth a watch.

Equalizer was in the same mold...not as much action as John Wick but it was more hard hitting and Denzel's a bad bad man.

Boyhood.

While a good movie we were left with a "what's the point of this" feeling. But the obvious pull of the movie is the timeline and how it was shot over a 12(?) year period using the same actors showing true coming of age. It was neat how they threw in time relevant social points.

"Equalizer" is on my list, just haven't got to it yet. Have you seen "Flight"? Denzel is a marvelous actor.

Interesting. Not sure I'll rent it, but probably watch when it hits Netflix.

I'm hearing a lot about "Birdman" and "Foxcatcher". Anybody recommend either/both of them?

Watched "Nightcrawler" last week. Strangely engrossing. Definitely a stretch from what Gyllenhaal usually does. Worth a watch if you like weird stuff.

The Theory of Everything....... snoozer. Eddie Redmayne was excellent but a slow movie and 2 hours I'll never get back.

I absolutely loved Boyhood. I'm a huge Linklater fan. You can't go into it expecting some action packed movie or anything. Not every movie has to have some grand finale. I think it's a beautiful movie that does a great job of capturing the real moments of growing up. That's the point.

Birdman was clearly loved by critics and awards shows, but I have some friends who see multiple movies a week and whose opinions I trust and they said it was utterly ridiculous and self-important. Just not a good movie. See it for yourself though I guess.

Foxcatcher had some great performances (Carrell was unrecognizable) but was depressing and boring, imo.

Wanted to catch Nightcrawler in theatres, but missed it. Will def catch it on netflix.

A lesser known movie that my wife and I loved is St Vincent with Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy. Very funny/touching movie.

Focus is INCREDIBLE! Will Smith is at his best and Margot Robbie is hot. I completely recommend it.

Kingsmen was amazing even though it was a lot more violent than I expected.

I loved equalizer too.

Jupiter Ascending was better than I expected.

50 shades bored me in the second half.

I loved flight. It was Denzel actually playing someone who wasn't "Denzel."

A great mash-up would be Denzel as Equalizer vs. Liam Neeson as his Taken character.

I liked Birdman. I can't say whether or not it's deserving of all the awards since I haven't seen any of the others, but it was entertaining.

I'm watching Boyhood next - this one intrigued me from the start.

I'm so very behind on movies...

I just finished Interstellar, I liked it, but it was SO very long, and every time I see Matthew McConaughey, I see the stoned dude from the Lincoln commercials.

So you mean everytime you see Matthew McConaughey, you see the stoned guy from Dazed and Confused?

RE: Movies -- what have you seen lately?
Boyhood was good, but after watching can definitely agree with it not winning best picture. The concept was awesome. The story/acting etc. was the same as most any indie film that comes out. Good work, and better than a lot of blockbuster movies, but not fantastic.

I'm so far behind on movies though, it's not funny. Since the little one came along, plus the few months leading up to it, no real movie time these days. But I like the trade off :-)

RE: Movies -- what have you seen lately?
Not a new movie (2007), but an interesting concept... "PVC-1" is based on a true story of a woman terrorized by having a bomb encased in PVC pipe attached around her neck and no way to remove it without setting it off. It was shot in real-time, all in one take. Let me say that again. 90 minutes of movie ALL IN ONE TAKE. It's riveting. You really start to feel the tension and feel invested in the outcome, like a fly on the wall or something, you're THERE. Only one part was a bit boring because it was nothing but about ten minutes of travel, but knowing that the camera never stops rolling makes it all seem to be happening right in front of you. Very suspenseful.
