Off Topic Question
I've been in DeKalb before, but I've never seen NIU's campus before. I have some time off this weekend, so I was thinking of making a drive up to DeKalb to see the campus. I'm an MBA student, however I take all of my classes in Hoffman Estates. I figured since I'll eventually have a degree from NIU and will financially support and love another institution along with the school I went to for undergrad, the least I could do is check out the campus and town haha.

I'm wondering if there are any wineries/a wine trail anywhere near DeKalb? I know my girlfriend will accompany me just for the trip out there, but hitting up some wineries would make the trip a lot more fun for her. Also, anything I must see/check out while I'm in the area? Thanks!

RE: Off Topic Question
Acquaviva Winery is a sponsor of NIU athletics, has a restaurant in Sycamore and their winery is in Maple Park.

As far as checking out the campus for the first time I highly recommend that you enter Castle Drive from Lincoln Highway. If you want an up close view of the castle turn left at the stop sign. The road is very short and will loop you around. Turn Left on the next road which is Gilbert Drive. Turn Left on the next road, which is Lucinda, then immediately turn right on to Garden. The 3rd large building on the right is the Business College. You should be able to park on the street if you want to go inside. If not the College has a drop off area that will make it easy for you to turn around or if you miss that there is a parking lot immediately after.

As far as checking out the rest of the campus I would say don't worry about it if you want as good of an impression as possible. If you want to see what part of campus needs help (aka donations to the general fund) then go back to Lucinda and turn right/West.

Since you are on here I would guess you are into NIU athletics somewhat so I would recommend that you check out Huskie Stadium, the Indoor and Yordon Center. You can park in the Alumni Visitor Center and walk to the indoor hallway to see the practice field, trophies and maybe even the team practicing since Spring Ball is underway.

Before you drive off check out the Alumni Visitor Center...I have not been inside other than on a game day so I have no idea if they have anything going on in there on non game days.

Not sure which route you're taking, but look on the map as to where you might pick up 47 heading south and take 38 west to go right past the Aquaviva Winery (47w614 Ill Route 38 / Maple Park / 630-365-0333). Good food, good wine, they hosted NIU's Football Signing Day bash.

RE: Off Topic Question
There is a winery in Waterman as well, which is about 15 miles south of DeKalb. Sycamore will be opening a brewpub soon, so not quite the same, but still could be on that radar.

If you're looking to get some gear, hit up Village Commons Bookstore. They have a larger selection than the university bookstore.

Fatty's is severely overrated but it's the best food in DeKalb and I still love/miss it.

"Severely overrated?" Yep.

"Best food in DeKalb?" Not even close.

I liked going to Fatty's for games and special events. We watched the Orange Bowl announcement there and we were regulars for Inside Huskie Sports when the show was taped there. As far as the food, it's decent bar food, but that's it.

My dekalb delicacies consisted of fast food, Molly's, fatty's, cheese nuggets & beer nuggets. Not much of a challenge.

The ones I've found to be not too far are the Acquviva place that was mentioned along with Galena Wine Cellars that is in Geneva. What else is there to do in Geneva?
