Makes sense to me.
Over praise leads to a child overvaluing themselves.
On the flip side ignoring leads to undervaluing.

We praise and congratulate mediocrity and failure these days.....which ironically enough, totally sets them up for failure later in life.

"You're very special son, just like every other kid in the world" lol.

The land of participation trophies.

Holy fark trying to manage some of the millennial on my team is frustrating.

Scene: 6 weeks after hire.

Sally: "Hi, I know I'm 23 with no experience but would it be OK if I changed my hours to 10-6 and worked from home 3 days a week. Monday, Thursday and Friday preferably." "Also, did I do a good job today?"

Me: Cocks head sideways, gives blank look.

I think you should keep a jar of treats on your desk so they can have a piece of candy when they do a good job and/or finish their projects. Maybe make a star chart for the wall of your office and award stars for perfect attendance.

Sheesh. What a bunch of coddled babies.

We have cards we can send electronically, we have budgets for lunches, we went casual the entire year, and yes, we actually have stickers. No shite. Stickers.

My company just recently went through such a review and some the comments from the younger generation were...

- I want to have a plan laid out that describes how I can be promoted.
- I like more positive feedback when I do a good job.
- I would like to see more social activities to make me feel included.
- I would like to be updated on what direction the company is going.

Now maybe it's because of my military background, but I was always taught that no one can care more about you're career than you. As such I was stunned by level of hand-holding and affirmation that was being requested. But this is the new workforce and if acceding to such demands will generate increased productively then my company and many others will implement these and other changes.

I guess I really have crossed into 'old man' territory.

This is why I decided to work for the family trade (and business). No excuses and you'll learn how to work hard or be pushed aside.

Vague stereotypes of generational idiosyncrasies are objectively stupid.

It's true but certainly not limited to a particular generation or generations. I've seen plenty of narcissistic jerks of widely varying ages. Half of them drive BMWs or other German sedans, it seems.

RE: Your kids are not that special - good article
I've already had this discussion with my wife and, thank God, we're in full agreement.

1. No bumper stickers on the car about our family, our kids grades, our kid tried really hard, etc.
2. My kid won't be rewarded for A's and B's but he will be punished for C's. I don't believe you get rewarded for what you're expected to do.
3. Reference #2. Excellence is rewarded. A's and B's aren't excellence. Given the current state of schools and our involvement anything less than B's are abject failure in my opinion.
4. Our mentality is that if you reward things that are expected, average, slightly above average, etc. what is their for them to strive for?
