RE: Looks like big news is coming...
The EPA has given a $200,000 grant to the city to tear down a structure that sits on a lot where many think a baseball field would fit. Regardless, an empty building that takes up 3 city blocks is going to be torn down and new development put in. The first thing going in is a factory that makes polymers. There is a lot of other space for other things. However, the last estimate I heard to tear the existing structure down would be in the $10M range, which this amount doesn't sniff. Huntington does have several other bids in for gran money that would go toward the project.

From what I've heard, the financial backing is in place. Its just a matter or securing the land now. If things continue the direction they are headed, we could be hearing some major announcements soon that will benefit both Huntington and Marshall. One of which could include a brand new baseball park.

A joint venture with a minor league baseball ownership group would be a smart/wise decision and investment.

UAB is benefitting from this with Regions Field and the Birmingham Barons (White Sox AA)... UAB gave up the property & now baseball uses it for most home games.

Funny that's been my Missassippy joke for the last 15 years. That and a good education is like Jethro Bodine, when you graduate the 6th grade, twice.

There are other sports besides Football and Basketball. And our kids that come to play baseball deserve their own baseball stadium. With a lot of land in and around Huntington contaminated in the early to mid 1900s because of industrial work there its near impossible to clear land without it costing an arm and a leg.

If this is done the way Ive been told it will clean up 3 city blocks and cost somewhere between 10-12 million dollars just for the demo and who knows for the clean up. So the 200K grant is basically a drop in the bucket but its better than nothing.

This property has been talked about being cleaned up ever since the Henderson Center was starting to be built in the late 70s.

That's the direction its heading. This area is very "Cincinnati Reds" country. Hopefully it would end up being an affiliation of some sort with them.
