with regard to this being a media driven event-in reality the media is simply following an internet, snapchat, youtube etc event. Once you understand that the alleged political correctness meme doesn't fit well any more. Has great consequences for an internet world where the media becomes less and less relevant.

Right. I joined a fraternity back in 1981 and this kind of thing never would have happened with us.
There is no place for this on a college campus in 2015 and yes it should be dealt with as soon as it rears its ugly head.
As for the Progs comment, well if it wasn't fror Progressives we would still have the same thinking of 1776

I understand where you are coming from but at the same time that is such a broad generalization to one area of the country. The south is not the only place where racism exists in this country, it may be the most famous but it is certainly not what the media makes it out to be. In fact there were some info a few years back that had more Klan rallies in Ohio and Indiana then Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana combined. Stupidity is everywhere, it is up to all of us to try and put a stop to it.
Oh the horror. Someone doesn't like black people, and in their private club at that. And shutting them down is for sure going to make them change their minds and like black people in the future.
I wish I could be friends with everyone but goodness, do we have to make force integration on everyone?
im way late to the party and dont know if this was already said but the outrage wasnt about them not wanting to be friends with black people
they made a lynching joke, used racial slurs, and it wasnt even an opinion conversation but them chanting it as a group...im certain they themselves knew it way unrealistcally racist which s probably why they did it and thought it was funny....
this is extremely offensive and they did this as a representation of a national organization which im certain has african americans in other chapters, imagine how theyd feel watching this wih no repructions, and this is a "private organziation" but its completely based around public opinion, if a frat is viewed as racist its ability to recruit and network will be dramatically hardend and the ability to get universities approval for events and funding becomes non existent
i honestly even doubt the kids in the video are actually racist and were probably just being dumb kids thinking they are funny but the outrage is warranted and the punishment is warranted ....

Apparently it was a sigma chi's girlfriend who was attending the date function with an SAE she was also friends with. She then showed it to the Sigs who brought it to IFC (rumor)

Yup. Even before the students death, their house really needed to learn how to deal with alcohol safety hence the shutdown. As far as I've heard they've been on a more or less good path since their reinstatement.

This is true. People rag on the south...but I have known a lot of white country boys...who had a lot black friends. In the south blacks are not some abstract concept..they are our neighbors, co-workers, teammates, and friends... stereotypes are often wrong.
I have heard people go on and on with righteous indignation about how white southern people are racist, dumb, inbred...etc.
They never even realize they are making assumptions about ones character based on the color of their skin or where they were born.

Riiiiiight.
Hmm I think there are pretty staunch differences in the cases. One being, the EX's were never said to be permanently banned at OU. (Just like Sigma Nu hasnt been permanently closed at TU)
Plus, after fighting for reinstatement the founders of the re birthed chapters usually value their efforts enough to install a good foundational culture. But, I'm not sure some of the other fraternities (such as KA or SAE) that celebrate the 'virtues' the old south is remembered for (chivalry, independence, etc...) can ultimately escape the dispicable nature of the racism that the southern culture of the 1800's was also attached to. The source material is probably written in to the rituals of the various fraternities, and while they may not explicitly say anything about racial issues they certainly carry it with them intrinsically...
Just as the confederate flag is argued to stand for those same good qualities but most people associate it with southern racial hypocrisy.
