Did anyone else hear that Chick Ludwig interview with GW today on 1530? I absolutely love hearing from the elders first off, reminds me of my father and great uncle. But it was such good radio to hear his stories of back-to-back NCs, should have been three in a row if it weren't for the refs after halftime, the Olympic gold medal, other stories and of course Oscar Robertson... THE best player to ever walk the earth according to both and Ken Broo's interview shortly after. Good stuff, the way the game was played, and with tournament time coming, GO CATS! 04-rock

RE: George Wilson
He was before my time, but I got to meet him at a golf outing and he talked to me for a good 5-10 minutes. May be the nicest person I ever met and I am not kidding. Great representative of the Bearcats and hope to get a chance one day to hang out with him and listen to his stories. From what I heard from others, he can go on forever with story after story.

I liked his answer to the question of how many more points would Oscar have scored if there were a three point line...none. He wouldn't have taken that shot. Never heard about the accusation that the refs must had received a "call" from someone at halftime during the NC game because they came out and blew the whistle so many times on UC to get them in foul trouble, something that those players never had a history of doing all season.

I recall that Paul Hogue pretty much man-handled Jerry Lucas in one of our championship games (can't remember which) and wasn't called. So everything evens out.

I also used to enjoy watching Hogue slow down the game from time to time by making a big production out of stopping to tie a shoelace. It would just about take him forever.

Damn, those were some great teams.

RE: George Wilson
I will reminesce a little bit about George Wilson. To begin with, you have to recall that freshmen were not eligible to play in their era. Wilson played on a UC freshman team with Ron Bonham. The two were great high school talents and were very heralded recruits for Cincinnati. UC was a recruiting juggernaut in that era. We could compete with any school for national recruits. Wilson came out of Chicago's Marshall high school and Bonham was from Muncie Central. Those were two great high school programs in that era. UC would later get Mike Rolf from Muncie Central and he too was a heralded high school recruit. Wilson was not a great offensive player, but he was very reliable. He consistently was a double figure scorer. But it was his rebounding, tough defense and court presence that made him an imposing figure and a key cog in the Bearcats' inside game and in our overall success, including the national championship his sophomore season and the national runner-up his junior year. He was a tremendous defensive rebounder. He did not have a great shot, but he managed to hit key baskets repeatedly over his career, often banking in shots from 5-10 feet. Played with the old Cincinnati Royals following his graduation, but he was not sufficiently skilled offensively to be a pro star. He did have a serviceable NBA career for several years post-UC. Wilson made the 1964 Olympic team for the United States, which of course is a significant accomplishment for any basketball player in our country. Wilson was tremendously liked by his teammates, possessing a very upbeat, outgoing and optimistic personality. From what I have heard, that is still true today.

Won an NCAA Title, NBA Ring, and Olympic Gold. That's really rare, especially among players from the era before pros could play in the Olympics.
