Budget cuts at Memphis results in team catching normal flights vs. charter.
Don't forget, chartered flights was considered a Recruiting Tool and Cal stated this was important for team morale, school, and recruiting.

Because Delta gave us a good deal from what I hear...
Is flying Delta now considered "low class" or something?
Delta isn't considered "low class" (although what they've done to Memphis is "low down." But comparing charter flights to commercial flights where you change planes isn't apples-to-apples, for sure.
I disagree, with the comment what Delta did to Memphis was not low down. They dehubed Memphis and cut 90% of all direct flights because they were losing big money here. Delta did what any other business would do cut your losses in select locations where business and or the population is decreasing and increase your direct flights to other cities that are growing like Nashville, Orlando, Charlotte etc.
Yes. They did all that AFTER they told Congress they would NOT do all that, so they could get approval for the merger with Northwest. Memphis was NW only hub south of the mason Dixon line. Delta's investment led this to being particularly obvious, this delta had to make promises they knew they would t keep. Definition of low down.

Their decision had nothing to do with the city of Memphis and everything to do with having a southern hub in Atlanta. Didn't Nashville recently lose their hub status with American?
longer than recently ago....SW has more than made up the difference there and AA has more of a presence in Nashville than Delta does in Memphis
The Memphis Airport Authority would be wise to study Nashville's airport as they remodel the new Concourse B.

How do you know it isnt? I know for a fact Josh stopped chartering on recruiting trips even before Bowen got here. And that was HIS decision.

RE: No Chartered Flights
While I get the idea of all charters being a small selling point in recruiting, and while I get the idea that of course if the team flies commercial that must be some conspiratorial message...which it is not...
As an aside...
I used to get a kick out of seeing the teams in the airport. Flew with them once to Florida...purely by accident but it was pretty cool. There will be charters, this is a small thing turned into the Zapruder film.

RE: No Chartered Flights
Recruits want to know that the program is top notch. Which one sounds better:
Coach will be here at 2 when his charter lands
Or
Coach might be here at 2 but it depends on his connecting flight and how long it takes to get through security
Sounds bush league

it's a contract.
if Delta offers a direct flight to that city, take the Delta flight.
of Delta doesn't, just charter it.
I guess the Tigers deciding to take the non-direct flight to Hartford somehow makes him a bad coach, lol

RE: No Chartered Flights
I am not sure what to think about this without seeing the financial statements and the production of them. I understand the need to cut costs, the question is how much of the cost-cutting was a result of diverting money into the FB program and how much was it simply of function of across-the-board budget cuts?
I am on the fence about Bowen. His prior place, San Jose, is simply a mess. They lost a head football coach - Dave Baldwin - because he made more money as an assistant at a P5 school. Most ADs have no earthly clue just how important Tiger BB is. Not sure if Bowen truly 'gets it'.

RE: No Chartered Flights
Tiger basketball is NOT important right now. Football is important, realignment is important. Basketball investment, at this particular moment, is trying to win the battle while losing the war. We got as good at basketball as a program could get, and it did not matter at all to the larger landscape. Basketball can be fixed and can be fixed quickly in a place like Memphis, but the other issues take priority. This is why Pastner WILL get another year. so either he gets better or the next year at a minimum is going to be a replay of this one.

RE: No Chartered Flights
So we went from flying a pimped out all first class 737 (NBA charter company skyking aviation), to flying chartered regular Delta regional jets, to changing planes in ATL pulling a carry on?
That will hurt recruiting. I was pissed when the started chartering with DL instead of SkyKing because I thought it would hurt recruiting.

I have no Issue with our team flying coach, on regular jets, with a major airline (Delta), WHEN CONVENIENT, to save some money...
I believe we chartered to Spokane, Greenville, and South Dakota this season...
I don't get the big deal.

Approx $2 million minimum has been diverted each YEAR from BB to FB for quite a while now. Where do you think all our basketball/Tiger Club donor money has been going to?

I don't get the big deal.
1. Recruiting perception. Cal used it as a tool. Big time teams don't fly commercial.
2. Time - Flying commercial means more time away from campus for the kids. More missed classes. Get there earlier, takes longer, have to spend the night after the game more often.
3. Risk - I fly commercial 60 flights a year. **** happens. Stuff gets lost. Flights get canceled. I spend at least two nights a year in the wrong city.
