Memphis Coach Josh Pastner Coming on Strong!
Gents,

Last night appeared to be a showcase for Josh Pastner. Multiple times in the broadcast, the announcers honed in on all of Pastner's 20 win seasons.
Then, for Memphis (with their injury situation) to come out with a win AT UCONN (with how they've been hot lately), Pastner was hailed as the conquering hero.
I know JP has dealt with his share of criticism from those on the board this year. But, I think he's seen nationally as a young coach on the rise.
With such a good recruiting class coming in next year, I think it's safe to say we'll be seeing this face around for awhile.

That would be awesome. Nicest guy in the world, I've emailed with him numerous times, he responds to every email, text, phone call...He does more for the university than you can imagine. But the Memphis job is about winning. I hope and pray he has figured it out and will right the ship.

Yep, even the people that are critical of him say he's a great guy and a great representative of the university, which makes any decision about him that much harder. He can recruit that's never been a question. He's still young enough that there's hope he can figure it out. I want Memphis basketball to be the program it should be for the sake of the league, so I hope he either does figure it out or you hire the guy who will quickly.

Actually, that's in great question. We have lost some serious Memphis talent since he's been here, and two of next year's three recruits are sons of a coach we hired to sign them. He's a good coach, won a state high school championship, but still. This year's recruiting class was a mess.

He needs to come on strong, his record vs top 25 teams at Memphis is abysmal.

Yes, but also consider:

(1) He inherited a gutted mess of a program left behind by Calipari (who took the best players to Kentucky with him), and prevented a disaster
(2) This year will make six winning seasons in a row (despite many injuries)
(3) Pastner is among the Top 5 winningest coaches under 40 in Division 1 ( http://athlonsports.com/college-basketba...s-under-40 )
(4) He is an excellent recruiter
(5) His players graduate and stay out of trouble
(6) Due to experience gained at our expense, he is a better coach than when we hired him and gets better every year
(6) We don't have to worry about him cheating or embarrasing the university. He doesn't even cuss.

As a fan of another school in this conference, I sure hope we do since he can't coach a lick.

1: Somewhat depleted, but gutted is what Cronin took over, a program returning 1 scholarship player.
2: Winning seasons are not that impressive of a stat.
3: How many coaches are under 40? Without that number, I am not impressed.
4: Recruiting great players only gets you so far. You have to know how to coach them. That is still a huge question mark.
5: Good, but winning games is important too.
6: Hard to get much worse. I would say he has underperformed with the talent he has had.
7: Losses are embarrassing.

Ramen, why do you troll other schools boards to get a quote to put in your sig? You mean that no one ever says anything bad about the opposition on the tigers board? Freaking stalker.

Ok, just checking. I was very Impressed by the heart the Fighting Pastners showed last night. Did that calm the lunatic fringe on the Memphis board somewhat? Seems like after any loss there are a dozen new threads on how to mutilate, kill, and then fire Pastner, I have not ventured over there today.

To be fair about the 5 seasons for Pastner before this year, he didn't just have "winning seasons." He won at least 24 games every year, and 31 one year.

Sure..but, serious question: What was his record against Top 25? I thought I read it was something like 6-27 or something like that and including during these years your are referring to in your post.

Again, serious question.
