How was this airport not closed? And LGA COMAIR runway is only 7000 ft long.

They closed it after the accident for a few hours. Those are short runways at LGA and visibility was only 2800' when they plane came in to land. That isn't much at all. They hit the fence and one wing was ripped off. Really lucky nobody got killed, dam near went into the bay or whatever that body of water is called.

Only two minor injuries. Those people on that plane were very fortunate. Pilots did a great job to keep the plane from going into the water. Also, a wing was ruptured and fuel was flowing out of it, so the fact there was no explosion was fortunate also.

Probably had a lot to do with the temperature and other weather conditions. Likely a much different outcome if it were sunny and 80 degrees.

What I meant was that the airport was open in spite of the weather condition. Reports are that the runway had just been plowed and aircraft on taxi felt the braking conditions were OK. But if you've ever flow into LGA, even on a good day it feels like the pilots are standing on the air brakes upon touchdown.

Well much like MDW and DCA, LGA is one of those airports that should be closed but isn't due their respective convenience.
