What Downtown building was this?
Behind the Orpheum in the photo below? Looks like it stood where the parking lot is now directly north of the Orpheum?

I don't know the name of it.

But that's it in the top center of this photo from 1958.

You've got to remember the famous Furry Lewis quote that called it "Urban Removal" when the Federal Government tore down so much beauty in Downtown.

Not that that particular building had any historic relevance.

RE: What Downtown building was this?
A wild guess ~ some kind of cotton warehouse because of its location and the large windows. Classing cotton requires lots of light.

I'm pretty sure it had something to do with the cotton Industry.

Based on this photo taken looking west down Beale Street is appears that the building was not located where the parking lot is now. I actually looks like it was north of there. It almost looks like it was standing where the Gayoso House is located, but that's impossible.

I think it's located more where the Autozone HQ is on Front St.

It's probably the Goldsmith's warehouse which was connected by a underground tunnel to Goldsmith's & the old Gayoso Hotel.

I got a job working at Goldsmith's the late spring through the summer of 1972 because my old girlfriend was working in the Credit Department.

Underground tunnels. That brings up a whole new subject. Those things were everywhere. Prohibition. 1920--1933

That is right across Front Street from the Gayoso so that makes sense.

Wasn't there a parking garage across the street from Goldsmith's and you had to walk across a tunnel to the store? or did Lowenstein have the garage with the tunnel?

Guess that makes us part of the same tribe. Can't believe the university gave the OK for that production.
