In trying to set a high tone, it is a good move. The longer that Layer remained the more intense the speculation would be on when he be let go. It's a wise and sound move.

Now, who are the top candidates? A search firm is already in place so AD Barber took prompt action to correct the most misguided of his programs. Good move Barber.

Here is my surprised face: 03-yawn

I find it interesting the way they worded the article saying Layer was "relieved of his duties" instead of fired. It almost sounds like he is still employed by Liberty but in another position.

Anyway, I think we should remember the good that Layer did despite all the bad. He took us to the NCAA tournament, he ran a clean program, and he was a good ambassador. So thanks Layer for all you've done and good luck in your future endeavors.

Very sad for coach. His family, and assistants. Great man, will be missed.

The press release was well done. I thought the use of "relieved" vs. "fired" was interesting too.

Thank you Coach Layer for your service to the University and your mentorship to these young men. It will be remembered. Good luck and blessings in your future.

Layer let go by Liberty
I want a young, dynamic, exuberant, high energy, fearless, faithful, faith filled, faith first, hard charging recruiting coach. I want fast paced offense, smart sharp shooting, tough pressure defense, and guys playing smoothly as a team..... with smiles on their faces.

I want a coach to schedule nationally, play tough competition from power conferences, and be engaging with the media and fan base.

Mostly though, I want a coach that wins no less than 17 games in a bad season, more than 20 in an average season, and 30 in an outstanding season.

Can you get your AD to send our AD a practice release so he doesn't look like a fool when the season ends in a couple days?

Well said AM. You have clearly stated for many of us what we need. Now we can look forward with excitement as the national search process begins and hopefully a strong hire. This can only help with our FBS quest as we re-energize and bring the program back to predominance and success.

Chief, you can appreciate to a similar level in what LU has been experiencing this year. Saw where the ASU record is 11-16 and that only Troy has a worse record at 10-18. I'm sure the catcalls and ASU/SBC board talk is also demanding changes and improvements.

We are fortunate at LU that our AD seems well liked and respected. He gets a thumbs up for making the touch decision to make a change so promptly. And as ArmyMike said, it was as upbeat a news release as could be. Even our beat writer, Chris Lang of the News & Advance, said the kids played hard for the coach and did not give up and that coach was in a tough situation. Soon we can move fully forward after the kind words and best wishes for our former coach with 100% dedicated to reviving the program. He was a good guy.

Well...our AD is very, very good at what he does. He's just never fired anyone before, so some of us are worried he'll spend too much time worrying about the buyout and forget that if we can't grow basketball, we might as well just not play it.

Uggh. That is a tough one. Our AD did the quality "let go". Our beat writer asked immediately after the game loss the status of the coach's position as he had one year remaining on his contract. AD said what is best for team and the school. Then went and personally told coach and players he was let go, then send out the "let go" release. In the release was mentioned the search firm hired to find candidates. As this all happened within a 2 hour time frame, it showed strong leadership and the ability for AD Barber to make a touch decision and most importantly, was done in a quality manner making the best of a poor situation being respectful of the coach.
