RE: Long snapper Hayden Sak commits
Is NIU one of the few schools who put this position on scholarship?

RE: Long snapper Hayden Sak commits
A long snapper is no different than a kicker/punter so I'm guessing that all long snappers are on scholarships. Back in my day, it was pretty unusual to get a scholly out of HS for long snapping only but that has changed.
An injury to your long snapper can wreak havoc on your special teams so unless a team has a very dependable back-up long snapper on the travel roster, there is no reason for your long snapper to play another position or be on the practice squad.

A kid from my town is the starting long snapper for Michigan, and I'm pretty sure he's on scholarship. He was a standout at long-snapping camps and rated as one of the best in the country. And when he wasn't long snapping, he was a decent lineman, albeit at a 1A school.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Boomer Mayes originally recruited as a long snapper?

Yes, Boomer was originally. I guess they found his other talents more of a value.

Here's an offseason thought experiment, I wonder if we'll ever see the day when holders get schollys. I know it sounds ridiculous but there was a day when neither snappers nor kickers got them either. Teams just tried out volunteers from the roster of regular players as they do with holders today. I guess the difference is that receivers have the exact skill set needed to be a holder whereas you won't find the one to one correspondence from a regular player to snapping or kicking. Still, maybe I should open a holders academy and charge top dollar...... (Although if there was actually a holders academy that 6-10 olineman from Arkansas would be a Summa *** Laude graduate since he holds on every play. I'm here all week!)

A few years ago, I was at a dynamite fundraising event attended by Coach Novak and the players. It was mostly a fundraiser for the first iteration of the endzone facility (now Yordon Center) There was an auction for several Huskie items. As Steve Azar was my absolute favorite Huskie at the time, I bid on and won an almost life size poster of Steve kicking a field goal. Coach Novak made sure Steve stopped by to autograph the photo, and he was very gracious to do so. As we were leaving the event, a guy kept following me to ask if I want the autograph of the holder, too, because holders get no respect. Of course, he was the holder and he eagerly signed the poster. His name is P.J. Fleck.

I just don't think it's really needed becaue you're always going to have backup QBs or punters who have a lot of spare time.
With that being said, NIU had some real issues with the holder last year when Wedel was PK until Beebe took over.

I believe he was recruited as the long snapper, but he wanted to play linebacker, and NIU told him he could come in and compete for a LB spot, but if that didn't work out, he'd be the long snapper.

And dog fan shares yet another example of PJ the attention whore. Why doesn't he just get a neon hat to wear that says watch me watch me?
