I took this from the CR board. The Dept Commish of the PAC12 proposes we push the start of basketball back a month which results in the sport wrapping up in May. Personally I like the idea. I have long maintained that most people are wired to only follow one sport at a time. It is no coincidence that our basketball attendance spikes significantly after football wraps up regardless of opponent (why else would we be able to get 12,000 for Houston in Febuary but get 7,000 for better quality opponents in November).

This isn’t a Pac-12 initiative, but rather a request to take a long look at the benefits and drawbacks—both on the court and in the classroom—of a change in the season’s schedule. It would begin in mid-December, after final exams, in the relative quiet period between the football conference championship games and marquee bowl games. This would push the Final Four back from the first week in April to the first week in May. By pushing the start of the season back, it would give college basketball a cleaner window—and less competition from college football—to start the season. It would also give the sport less competition in the final months, as a conference season starting around Feb. 1 would help the sport escape the shadow of both college football and the NFL.

That would cause more overlap with baseball, but I do not think that is as big of a deal as it used to be.

I am sure the NBA is likely against this as well, a some people probably do not pay attention to pro ball until after March Madness is over.

I like it because the conference championship would be in April, when the weather is better for traveling. April in Orlando would be great.
