Lady Tigers Basketball
This past weekend at UConn:

MEMPHIS....................... 9 15 - 24
UCONN......................... 54 33 - 87

Granted UConn is #1, but 54 to 9 at the half?

Is a 63 point loss acceptable?

The Lady Huskies' 2nd half total of 33 points beat our complete game total of 24 by 9.

UConn's average margin of victory this year is 50.

So it's OK to get blown out by 63 to UConn.

What about this?

The Lady Tigers (13-16, 7-11) fell 60-53 to SMU (7-21, 3-14) to finish the regular season on a 4-game slide. They are 2-7 over their last 9.

No one said it was ok, the point being that they are an overwhelmingly strong team, for just about any team, not just Memphis.

I'm not convinced that we have the right Women's coach. Recruiting is no where close to where it has to be in order to make the NCAA tournament.

Would we accept the men's team getting blown out by 63 at #1 Kentucky this year? Or to any #1 team any other year?

Well, the job should improve - if the fairgrounds thing goes down, then they have a new arena - plus playing in the same league as UConn should be a boon to recruiting as well.

Maybe slide Josh over to the women's program?

Bring home Nikki McCray-Penson:

Quote: Two-time Olympic gold medal winner and Women's Basketball Hall of Fame inductee (Class of 2012) Nikki McCray-Penson reunited with her former teammate when she joined head coach Dawn Staley's South Carolina staff in May 2008. Following an 11-year professional playing career, McCray-Penson moved into the coaching ranks in 2006, spending two seasons on the bench at Western Kentucky before joining the Gamecocks. A three-time WNBA All-Star and the 1996-97 ABL Most Valuable Player, McCray-Penson has proven to be a standout recruiter who helped South Carolina land the nation's No. 2 recruiting class and the top player in the country in 2014.

McCray-Penson's energy and experience have helped the Gamecocks to three consecutive 25-win seasons and NCAA Tournament appearances (2012, 2013, 2014). The Gamecocks have finished among the SEC's top four each of the last three seasons, including securing the program's first SEC regular-season championship in 2014. That same year, South Carolina earned its first NCAA Tournament No. 1 seed, advancing to the Sweet 16 for the second time in three seasons to finish the season ranked No. 8 in the nation, the program's highest mark in more than 30 years.

"Success doesn't happen overnight, but when you are invested in the people around you and you want them to succeed, good things will happen," McCray-Penson said. "Our goal is to win a national championship, and because of the hard work and dedication of our staff and players every day, we are in a position to compete for that title every year."

McCray-Penson got her start in coaching at Western Kentucky where she played a key role in recruiting. With her on the staff, the Lady Toppers to a 49-17 record, which included a WNIT semifinal appearance in 2006-07 and a Sun Belt Tournament title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament in 2007-08.

This seems like a fishing thread to compare the Men's coaching job and the Women's.

Maybe the 2,000 women on the Support JP page are better for commenting, but why do we care all of the sudden how the Women's team does? And how does this question come up after a loss to the almighty UConn? Hmmm....

If they could land Nikki McCray the program would takeoff and I know nothing about women's hoop except it is dominated by about 10 schools

Correction. As you said, there are about 10 womens teams that are any good, BUT, there's only one that dominates, year in and year out and that's UCONN.

Trying to compare the men's game vs. the women's game is a bit of a reach. The talent pool for women's basketball is so thin that only a few get the best.

Yes. And UCONN is in our conference.

We have failed to capitalize on two simultaneous events. Pat Summit is gone and we are in UCONN's conference.

With those two things and the right coach, we should have a shot to build a program.

(1) I prefer to keep women's basketball on-campus. It's one of the main reasons that I go to their games. The Field House is a nice atmosphere for WBB - the right size for our crowds.

(2) I think Nikki-McCray would make a fine coach, but we already have one who is very qualified and dedicated.

(3) As shown in the following link, UConn has beaten hell out of just about everyone they played this year, including "blue-blood" WBB programs.
http://www.uconnhuskies.com/sports/w-bas...sched.html

(4) I wonder how many of those who posted in this thread have watched our women's team play this year. I have attended a few, including the game played against UConn at the Forum recently (free admission and right after the men's game, yet attendance was lousy). During that game, we competed very evenly for nearly a half, before breaking down. I don't know much about basketball, but it seems to me that our team is well-coached and definitely plays their hearts out. They need and deserve better support.

I hope you feel the same way about Coach Pastner
