probably more restrictions from the ncaa than mlb for that type of drop in situation

This is a plus for Rice, not something to be bitter Rice fans about. Lance was on Astroline last week on the radio and spoke glowingly about Wayne Graham and Rice. He indicated he's getting his degree because it opens up more opportunities to coach at the college level. In addition to finishing up his degree he has three daughters, so a short term gig like this makes more sense for him, gives him more of a chance to ply his trade, and will make him a better coach if and when he ends up back at Rice. (It also continues to be a chance for Rice publicity because when he's coaching he's inevitably going to get the Wayne Graham questions).

it keeps his Astros connection alive. He can still go to the Rice games in the stands and tell Wayne or the other coaches what he thinks after the game.
