Can Palmore Redshirt next year?
I do not know if someone can legally take a year off between their junior and senior year. But if it is possible it would be highly advantageous for the program to let Palmore red shirt next year. I like Palmore's game and I love his attitude. He has sacrificed for the good of the team just like Bacote although people do not talk about it as much. The benefits of him redshirting next year are:
1. It would separate Freeman and Palmore
2. Ahmed Caver would get more PT next year
3. Unless we get an injury you don't need 3 pgs next year.
4. The biggest benefit. We woould have Freeman and Caver next year and Palmore and an experience Caver for 2016 and 2017.
I do not want to go into 2016 and 2017 without an experienced PG. If Palmore plays next year Caver will not get as much PT. 2016-17 we would be left with a very young Caver as our starting PG because Freeman and Palmore would have graduated. PG is somewhere that you need a lot of experience. We could go JC but that is an even bigger gamble.

I just don't believe he will redshirt. It doesn't hurt to have that experience and depth in there at point guard. It is an advantage.

Can Palmore Redshirt next year?
As per the rules, he can do it. I just don't see it happening.

He can, but it never happens unless there is a redshirt. It would hurt the team next year without having him coming off the bench and what if 12 games into the season Freeman twists and ankle and you have to burn Pallmore's redshirt?

Speaking of log jams. What are we going to do with all the 2s and 3s we will have next year. Assuming Caver plays some at the 1 and some at the 2 just to find him minutes, we have him plus Baker, Mosely, Bacote, Douglas, Talley, and Carver. All of whom everyone has said will be the second coming of someone at one time or another.

Let them compete for playing time.

It's an interesting idea, but I don't see it happening. I don't think I have ever heard of something like that being done anywhere else.

It seems to me that Caver and Carver would both most likely redshirt as freshman. Why burn a year of Caver during Freeman's last year when you have Palmore as a back up and Caver can learn in practice? Kind of like Bentley behind Heinicke.

He was a brilliant politician but it applies to basketball in this case.

Good Points. Caver will learn in practice weter he is red shirting or not. I would not like to walk into 2016-17 without a PG having game experience. I thik PG is the most important position, they set the tempo for the team/game. If Palmore redshirts next year, he may start in 16-17 and we will have two experienced PGs instead of no experience PGs.
Palmore redshirting next year will pay benefits for the program for the next 2-3 years. Think about it, if I had my way Palmore would red shirt next year.

Like in politics, if you try to cater to everyone, you get less than optimal results in sports. You can't play that many players and get the best production they are capable of.

No offense, but it makes no sense. Of all the positions on a team, point guard is probably the easiest transition to college from high school, unless you are trying to turn a combo guard into a PG. If coach Jones needs another PG on the roster after next season then he will bring in a JUCO or sign another HS player. Redshirting is normally done when a player can use that season to bulk up or make improvements in his game, not because the coach thought he could use him more the next season. I like Palmore a lot but I don't see where sitting out a year is really going to make him a better shooter. The rest of his game is very solid and he should be a big part of our team next year backing up Freeman and playing alongside him at times.
All of that being said, I do remember a time when Coach Jeff Capel redshirted one of his big men, Skipper Youngblood, because he had Cal Bowdler and Reggie Bassett in the same class as seniors. Youngblood redshirted his rising senior year and started his 5th year at center. But that is the only time I have heard of it and don't see it working in Palmore's case. Next year could be special for us and we will need all parts clicking. Depth can be a good problem to have.

I'm KP's biggest supporter but why would JJ want to do this? He is putting in his own guys and part of that process is to cycle out the old regime's players. JJ is handling this transition very, very well.

Andre Dawkins did it a few years back at Duke between his junior and senior year. But yes very rare.

If you are palmore, who appears to be very bright, would the opportunity to get some grad school for free make it more attractive?

And Dawkins had a really unique and unfortunate situation. He sat, not due to playing time, but to get his mind right, as he was still reeling from his sister's death.

Plus I believe he enrolled at Duke a year early so it was not that much of a stretch to sit a year.

The only problem there is that we would enter the 2016-17 season with no experienced point guards. If Caver is ready, he needs to play.
