RE: Can Palmore Redshirt next year?
Palmore has been doing pretty well recently but I don't think I would want him as our main point guard.

He is ideal as a backup for 5-10 minutes a game. Handles the ball well and plays defense but has no shooting ability. Definitely not a starting point guard but a good role player.

Kelly Olynyk, now of the Celtics, took a redshirt between his sophomore and junior seasons and credited it for his becoming a first rounder.

But if it is possible it would be highly advantageous for the program to let Palmore red shirt next year. I like Palmore's game and I love his attitude. He has sacrificed for the good of the team just like Bacote although people do not talk about it as much. The benefits of him redshirting next year are:
1. It would separate Freeman and Palmore
2. Ahmed Caver would get more PT next year
3. Unless we get an injury you don't need 3 pgs next year.
4. The biggest benefit. We woould have Freeman and Caver next year and Palmore and an experience Caver for 2016 and 2017.

I do not want to go into 2016 and 2017 without an experienced PG. If Palmore plays next year Caver will not get as much PT. 2016-17 we would be left with a very young Caver as our starting PG because Freeman and Palmore would have graduated. PG is somewhere that you need a lot of experience. We could go JC but that is an even bigger gamble.

Please list your comments.

No offense, but it makes no sense. Of all the positions on a team, point guard is probably the easiest transition to college from high school, unless you are trying to turn a combo guard into a PG. If coach Jones needs another PG on the roster after next season then he will bring in a JUCO or sign another HS player. Redshirting is normally done when a player can use that season to bulk up or make improvements in his game, not because the coach thought he could use him more the next season. I like Palmore a lot but I don't see where sitting out a year is really going to make him a better shooter. The rest of his game is very solid and he should be a big part of our team next year backing up Freeman and playing alongside him at times.

All of that being said, I do remember a time when Coach Jeff Capel redshirted one of his big men, Skipper Youngblood, because he had Cal Bowdler and Reggie Bassett in the same class as seniors. Youngblood redshirted his rising senior year and started his 5th year at center. But that is the only time I have heard of it and don't see it working in Palmore's case. Next year could be special for us and we will need all parts clicking. Depth can be a good problem to have.

Good point about Skipper Youngblood. I had forgotten about that situation. I do disagree with you about PG transition from HS. PGs have to deal with the increased speed of the game. PG out critical for team chemistry and ttempo on the court. PGs come a dime a dozen. It would not be easy to get a quality one out of JC. I have seenalot of teams with good players but no one to distribute and set the pace.

I never thought about JJs desire to cycle through all of Blaine's players, so that could impact the dynamics of the team.

Interesting thought, glad you brought it up Frontrunner, fun to think about this stuff. I don't think that will happen myself.

He was a brilliant politician but it applies to basketball in this case.

Like in politics, if you try to cater to everyone, you get less than optimal results in sports. You can't play that many players and get the best production they are capable of.

Well I guess this means you believe Palmore will redshirt or leave the team since there isn't enough room on our team for all these guards. We will have to wait until next year to know but I believe there is room enough under our tent" team" for all the players. No one will need to be catered too some players like being on a successful team and playing occasionally.

RE: Can Palmore Redshirt next year?
I have a great appreciation for what Palmore has done this year. It's a great credit to his character that he accepted his redefined and reduced role this year and modified his game to be an effective, largely overlooked contributor to this year's success.

It's not easy to be an effective back-up PG on a mostly half-court team...it's more important to limit mistakes and maintain continuity on offense rather than trying to make an immediate impact like Mosley and Palmore was often hesitant and inconsistent in the first half of the season.

I look at the UAB debacle as the game where Palmore successfully completely his transformation...he got extended PT for the first time in weeks and gained confidence and composure when some of the other Monarchs failed. Starting with that game (10 games) Palmore is 13-17 FG with only 6 TOs (1 in the last 4).

I heard the reactions from many seated around me each time Palmore entered the game earlier this season. He's silenced the critics and just maybe he will even generate a couple of cheers these last two games.

Great post 78. We are a "team" and that's why we are 22-6 when some others with "perhaps" more talent can only wish they had our record.

RE: Can Palmore Redshirt next year?
The KP Rondo move was the best. When he doesn't force things and plays within his game he's fine.

I laugh, some seem to forget he was our starting PG for most of the season last year. He was part of the turning it around process for the Monarchs. His hard nose play, in your face defense and the way he comes out with the ball, are some things he does better than any on the team. His un-timely TOs while forcing to get inside and lack of outside jumper are his weaknesses and is a reason he's coming off the bench. He does come off the bench with energy and plays the defensive stopper, and that's nice. You know this year he hasn't turned it over as much and has given us some great minutes.

He can RS next, he won't unless some unforeseen thing happens. He came very close to leaving the program last year after losing the starting PG job, I don't think he's a guy to sit out. The staff won't even suggest RS'n. The only reason is to move another schoolie to 2017, which is turning into a great class for the 757. He's not going to devlop much more and I would rather use the schoolie on Grad or JuCo big. Caver has to play one year with Trey. There is another PG the staff is working on. This staff likes guards, so we'll always have a handful. Kind of like Bobby Wilder and QBs, he will recruits good QBs cause half the staff are former QBs.

What Keenan brings to the team is invaluable IMO. I would love to see him get more playing time because he attacks the defense.

I know a lot of people on here weren't big fans of Batten, but he was a physical guard that wasn't afraid to attack the basket. We need that balance of having spot shooters with guards that are also willing to attack. I think ODU has gotten themselves in trouble in games this year when they settled for jump shots instead of attacking.

I too like Palmore and his game. If he was a quarter step quicker, or a half inch taller, or had more of an outside game, he would be ridiculous. If he had all 3, he'd be all conference.

We have been much better attacking the basket lately. And playing the great early season defense again too. Very exciting end of season.

RE: Can Palmore Redshirt next year?
Palmore will need play a significant role in Birmingham for ODU to be successful. There is no doubt that ODU is a better team with Freeman on the floor, but as hard as Freeman plays and as relentlessly as opponents defend him, 100+ mins over 3 days may be more than he can deliver.

JJ has to be judicious in subbing for Freeman in order to advance, but a strong 10-12 mins/g from KP could be a difference maker.

Yeah, that makes sense. Just hope we always can have Freeman or Bacote in the game at all times.

Our depth at the guard spot might make the difference in the tournament setting.

The refs are the wildcard. If they let us play defense, we are going to be a very tough out.
