In a 32 minute game.

Keith Lee numbers.

Great game but it is still high school. Next season, he will be a freshman playing against guys with => speed, athleticism, physical size, etc.

I hope he is a Keith Lee drone but realistically I think it will take 2 years.

However, some true freshmen can take the court and dominate the college game.

Penny and David Vaughn and it took a while for them to jell. There was even doubt we would make the tournament until we got on a run and went to the Great Midwest finals. And Penny was the primary ball handler. What makes you think the Lawson's are going to turn this team around? Josh's coaching?

Penny WAS the primary ball handler. I don't care what position he was listed at. Neither of the Lawsons will be that here.

In the year that you referenced, '92, our senior point guard, Tony Madlock, was the primary ball handler. If you doubt that, then you need to go back and watch the games. There's no doubt that Penny had the ball a lot because he played great defense and rebounded. He was also our best scorer. That doesn't mean he was the primary ball handler. Penny played off the ball all of his sophomore year and the first half of his junior year.

Thats the way I remember it too. I dont remember much about Sidney Coles from that era. I remember Marcus Nolan but mostly from his crazy attempts to dunk on players twice his size and his unhappiness about his role (was it Nolan's dad that picketed the Pyramid?).

Did we not play Leon Mitchell a lot at the 1 with Billy Smith at the 2 and Penny at the 3 but with Penny being the primary ballhandler and initiator of the offense? Thats what I remember but those memories are not quite as sharp as they used to be.

Looking at the old media guides, the Tigers played 32 games in Hardaway's last year here. Penny, Billy Smith, Anthony Douglas, Kelvin Allen (replacing injured David Vaughn) were starters. At the other guard spot was Sydney Coles (20 games started), Marcus Nolan (7 starts) Leon Mitchell (2 starts) & Rodney Newsome (3 starts).

I seem to remember Nolan starting to begin the year. He was benched, and Coles took over. Coles got hurt, then Mitchell & Newsome started.
As far as who played point guard.... Nolan played point at the first of the year. I barely even remember Coles, and am not sure where he played. I'm certain that Newsome was not a point guard - he played the 3 & Penny played point. Probably the same with Leon Mitchell.

What's funny is that team started 0-3, with losses to Arkansas, Tennessee & Tulane (at home). They then lost to BYU in Hawaii to start out 3-4, and finished 20-12. All of this with 2 Parade All Americans, and one of the best players ever to wear a Tiger uniform on the team.

Didn't Vaughn go down for the season in the very first game though? I think its a bit of a stretch to say we had 2 All Americans when one of them only played one half of the first game and was out the rest of the year.

Anthony Douglas was a Parade AA & McDonald's AA.

Really, I had no idea. Didn't really follow recruiting back in the pre-internet days.
