BYU Keeps MUM on Brawl Discipline
http://www.sltrib.com/sports/2217422-155...n-football

Quote:As for not announcing the discipline that would be meted out for players' involvement in the brawl after the nationally televised overtime loss to Memphis — something the Tigers did last month while not naming names — Holmoe said BYU "talked about it a lot" internally and decided not to for the same reasons that it no longer discusses Honor Code violations publicly.

"If it was the other way, people would say, 'Why do you have to comment on everything and embarrass these kids more in everything that they do?'" Holmoe said. "And I think that was probably the most important [reason], is we felt that we were going to deal with the situation [privately] and we were going to discipline people [and not announce it]."

Not sure that announcing team punishments (as Memphis did) amounts to embarrassing kids. AND, so what if it does? Actions have consequences!!!! Sorry, this just struck me as odd when I read it. Not buying it.

It's BYU, they probably got special privileges instead of punishment.

One of many reason's not to have BYU in your conference. Although, if they were part of a conference then the conference itself may give out a punishment.

Just part of the reason BYU controlled by the Mormon Church doesn't want any publicity of the brawl because it would look bad to their church. I'm glad they are not part of the MW anymore.

Embarrass them MORE? More than what? Have they been embarrassed already? If so, by whom?

Urm, they lost the fight, "They started." They were unable to land a sucker punch on a player not even looking at them and they were video taped while failing. Yeah I'd call that embarrassing. 04-cheers

It is strange. BYU kicks out a basketball player for violating the Honor Code just before the NCAA Tournament and now they refuse to punish fighters. Disappointing.

Worried about embarrassment? The fight was on national TV and all over youtube.

BYU changed their policy last year to say nothing about athlete discipline, especially regarding the honor code. There was major backlash from the Brandon Davies/NCAA tournament situation, as well as some other alcohol related punishments.

I agree that announcing suspensions and discipline, without putting forth names would be a much better PR move; but, for better or worse, BYU is sticking to the new policy of resolving discipline issues privately.

I was not aware of the change. Thank you for the information.

That is the same thing UC goes through with Xavier here in Cincy, they are a private school and do not by law have to announce anything ( no public taxes ). UC player drinks two beers, defends his girlfriend from some drunk, all over news and front page. Xavier guy kills somebody, nary a word from Univ.-----True.
