The only team I think we are more desirable to be at for a coach nationally is Marshall. The rest are much bigger or a much better location.

I would quote the NIU section, but...
Its a football thread, and its not about WMU, if there was a like button Id like this thread even if it doesn't include NIU just for that reason hAH

RE: ESPN: The Best Group of 5 Jobs
When you look at all the things considered in the criteria its pretty hard to argue that NIU should be ahead of any of those programs. NIU is a good G5 job but definitely not a best in class G5 job.
Interestingly the list almost entirely MWC and AAC teams. Playing in the MAC on Tuesday nights in empty stadiums doesn't exactly help the case either. Neither does the fact that our head coach makes less money than the EMU coach.

Lets be honest here, does it really surprise anyone that NIU isnt among the teams listed?

No, and that's what makes the success in the last 5 years all the more amazing.

Said this in another thread about this article, but if we were in either of those conferences there is no doubt NIU would be on that list. The MAC is a tier lower.

Yeah, compared to the others and the criteria, I agree. It is amazing how much we have succeeded in spite of all the challenges (7 away game seasons, poor scheduling, coaching turnover, etc). 5 straight 11+ win seasons... pretty remarkable.

The beer nuggets alone make DeKalb the place to be. Other than that though....

Nope. All the listed schools, including Marshall, pay their coach WAY more than NIU does.

I like this list better:
http://www.sbnation.com/college-football...utah-state
It's the top 10 G5 programs for 2015 and NIU is #7, WMU also on the list. You can argue that NIU should be up a2-3 notches but then again Cincy is behind NIU here.
Huskies have the schedule in 15 to challenge Boise for the top spot in G5, which is more than you can say for Marshall or Lafayette

Until we can consistently draw more than 20,000 fans we will never be considered a prime coaching job.

Agree. And, to be considered a prime coaching destination, NIU would have to bump up our Head Coach's salary significantly. Right now, all the schools listed in the ESPN article pay their Head Coach at least twice as much as NIU pays Carey.

Jerry Kill got a Big10 job
Dave Doeren is at NC State
Multiple assistants move up.
Sounds like a good place to me.

However, if we were in either of those conferences, there's a great deal of doubt that we would have had the same type of success we've enjoyed.
Way too many unknowns for you to make that claim. We're in either of those conferences and maybe we don't have a burning desire to beat anyone like we did against Toledo; maybe we don't have Novak followed by Kill followed by Doreen.

RE: ESPN: The Best Group of 5 Jobs
It's about best G5 -JOBS- though. I'm kinda surprised ECU isn't there with their big stadium & appeal... I think the best-job-to-have part probably has to deal with how much clout in the general football arena one gets, how much money the team/university draws in, etc. I can see why on a short list, NIU wouldn't be up there on that. I think if After NIU expands their stadium, and wins the MAC 3/5 years while going to the MACC 4/5 years, and rivaling other teams more than once to make the Access Bowl, they could creep up there.

All you gain with the AAC is a tenfold travel budget. Not worth the lateral at this point

How is it a lateral move? It's THE feeder conference for the P5 schools, and far and away the best G5 conference. Better bowl game berths and more access to east coast recruiting plus their TV deal is much better than the MAC's... the level of competition is higher too and it'd help with recruiting efforts being in a more prestigious conference.
