Have you seen Evans throw? He can run. That's it.

Cataclysmo and Rath allow me to summarize:

how's that

Just being able to run might put him above Coney. I agree we're screwed if Kiel goes down, but I'd still rather have Evans than Bennie.

Agreed. Maybe Coney is not FBS QB. Evans should not be either.

My biggest worry is still the defense. The jury is out until we see the product on the field but last year was just brutal despite the late season improvement.

On offense what I want to see is Kiel staying healthy with quicker reads and decisiveness and less QB runs. I understand the occasional need to call a QB running play but did anyone else cringe every time Kiel ran and put his shoulder down into the tacklers? He's tough that's for sure but give the rock to Boone, please! Unless it's proven otherwise, this kid should be the starting RB spelled by the other backs IMO.

Really? My opinion is the guy is tough. He got slammed in the ribs and played hurt almost every game after that hit. Your concern for a back up is legit.

Bottom line is that he started all 13 games but left 40% of them, never to return for the rest of the game. If that happens this year, we're in trouble.

Agreed, but I do not think it was because he was fragile. He played the year with badly bruised ribs.

Brendon Kay played a large part of his last season with several fractured ribs and I believe a fractured sternum and rarely missed a snap. The HC coach never referred to him as "fragile". Just sayin'.
That being said, keeping fingers crossed that Gunner has a huge, injury free season. We really need him in there full time.

Or left games with cramps. Once when he left mid game to go to the locker room and nobody had any idea why my son was convinced he just needed to go poop.

I felt that a lot of guys in this forum were a little harsh with Kiel in regards to injuries and playing time. It's really easy to sit here and say, "Kid needs to toughen up and play" or "It's football, you play hurt" but not everybody has the same tolerance for pain. Just because Kay played hurt doesn't mean Kiel can. And then the type of injury also matters both to being able to play (mobility, etc) and also level of pain. Kay did player hurt a lot but that doesn't mean he and Kiel had the same injuries thus making Kiel just a wimp as compared to Kay.

As far as I could tell, Kiel did play hurt last year...a lot.

I tend to think the coaching staff know if Kiel 'should' play or not based on doctor instructions, kiels one on one discussions with them, etc. I'm sure CTT and his staff have the same approach we do: their first thought is, Kiel needs to play so if he doesn't play, there is probably really good reason for it.

+1 The only thing I question is the kids head. With his ribs hurt Kiel needs to learn when to slide when he runs! I don't fault the kids effort or being a "gamer."

Kiel clearly took the field when he shouldn't have. Dude is tough. But you can be as tough as a coffin nail and still not be able to play effectively. Injuries happen.

We still need effective back ups, though. I hope we can have a few blowouts and get game time for the reserves.
