Our starting PG left after a half, our starting 2 left before the half, and our best player did close to nothing.

Oddly, I think we will be tough in the tournament.

Actually, the refs really put the whistles in the pocket in the big dance, I think that helps SMU.

Look, SMU is a big, long, and physical team. They like to score inside and they like to swat shots back in the faces of the shooters. They like to set bone crunching screens and play lockdown defense.

You need a certain kind of ref crew that appreciates that kind of play, but I thought it was called pretty correct tonight. The refs did miss a key travel on Manuel who then fed the ball to Moore for a big three. However, after that, Memphis did come back to tie it.

Nic Moore showed what he can do in crunch time and the size, physical play, and athleticism of SMU finally won out.

Was a great and entertaining game.

Good luck to Memphis going forward. Win the rest of them (especially beat Tulsa for us).

I disagree. The first half was called poorly. I don't really like refs who feel the need even up foul counts... But I also don't like seeing one team shoot 18 ft's and another one not be no-called to death. The same thing happened in Tulsa.

Very relieved to get a win in Memphis tonight against a team that has been playing really well lately. Good luck to the Tigers the rest of the way and I wish the tournament was in Memphis again this year. I always have a great time in Memphis.

Perhaps you are right, Memphis and Tulsa would have beat SMU if It weren't for those meddling refs!

/cheers and let's see how your hurricanes do against Memphis.

I enjoyed reading your blog...very good insight. Shaq had a nice game, just not much other offense from the other Tigers.

Good luck on the rest of your season. Finish strong, play hard in the AAC tourney, and then whatever post season play Memphis gets in.

/cheers

I think we keep plating this way and we are looking at a 5 seed. Win the AAC tourney and who knows.

Good game tigers. Shaq was tough to stop, Nichola had a bad night shooting though. He seemed frustrated for long stretches.

The refs allowing SMU to be so physical will greatly benefit them in the NCAA's.
Typically the non power conferences are relegated to refs that call fouls for drops of sweat hitting the floor.

The Temple @ Tulsa game was allowed to be physical and while it didn't directly help either team, it gave them an opportunity to play a physical game that was called like most NCAA Tourney games are.

That said, SMU benefited from one sided officiating in the first half at Memphis IMO.

All you jump shooting teams that complain about foul discrepancy, and refs favoring SMU are cute. Try attacking the basket and passing inside to the post, and ou too might get to the free throw line. Refs don't win or lose game, but they will forever be the scapegoat.

Congratulations to SMU for the win and your well-deserved ranking. You hit the clutch shots at the end of the game when you needed them and won fair and square in a hard-fought game. We were, of course short-handed late at the guard position due to flu, a jaw-injury and a technical foul. Good teams capitalize upon such opportunities, and you did. Our team doesn't mind the physical play.

THIS - the ref bitching has gotten out of hand. We play inside and most of you guys dont.

To what team do you refer? Not Memphis, just curious who you're talking to.

Are people really calling Tulsa a jump shooting team?

God you are ignorant. Neither Tulsa nor Memphis are jump shooting teams. Memphis has two of the better post men in the conference and Tulsa relies on driving the ball via its guards or using our smaller but more athletic forwards to outpace the opposing bigs.

I'm not angry that they were letting SMU get away with physicality in these games. I'm just angry that they weren't letting the opposing teams do the same. IMHO the only games I've seen where both teams wer allowed to be physical are the ones SMU lost due to aggressive guys like Octavius Ellis of Cincy.

Also things like delay of game violations (or at least a warning) need to be called. SMU was purposefully trying to get the ball away from our baseline so we couldn't get the ball in after they scored because they know we like to inbound the ball quickly and it would have hurt them. It's a smart tactic if the refs let you get away with it.

RE: ***Official Memphis vs SMU Game Thread***
SMU generally forces teams to take 3 point shots because their interior defense was something like 10th in the Country in Defense FG % coming into last nites game. I haven't checked but I'm willing to bet that SMU has had more 3 point shots taken against them than any team in the conference and is last in 3 pointers attempted

We damn sure forced Tulsa to shoot from outside:
3 Pointers:
SMU 3-10
Tulsa 9-28

Note who picked up Memphis fouls-their Guards because their plan was to deny Nic Moore the ball. No other Memphis player had more than 2 fouls. I don't think he got a shot for first 15 minutes. So we are talking about Guard fouls based on Memphis strategy to deny Nic Moore the ball. They were all over his jock strap in the first half as anyone watching on TV could see on replays. They earned their fouls.

RE: ***Official Memphis vs SMU Game Thread***
Here the stats-SMU EASILY has defended more 3 point shots than any team in the AAC-a whopping 622. And SMU EASILY has taken less 3 point shots than every team in the AAC-only 317-Memphis 406 Tulsa 457. SMU is a damn well coached team on both ends of the court-Top 15 in both Offensive FG% and Defensive FG %. We pass, we penetrate and we aggressively attack the basket. We take HALF the 3 Point Shots that our opponents do. Good Basketball
