RE: Another reason to despise the NCAA
The NCAA's in a tough spot with things like that. Yeah, such a blanket judgement when there was no apparent ill intent completely sucks, but when you start making exceptions, somebody's always going to try to justify bending the rule that much further to try and get away with something.
It's like the rule on selling autographs & personal merchandise. It sounds perfectly sensible to say, "If some guy is willing to give a kid $20 for an autograph, who's it hurting?" but the minute you start allowing that, some Alabama fan will start offering $10,000 apiece for players' autographs to outbid the guy at Auburn who's only offering $8,000.

The COA amounts are going to be supervised by the conferences. They're not going to be a straight-up bidding war.
Part of me wishes the NCAA would cut the "Power 5" loose and let them just have a no-holds-barred free-for-all. The whole thing would collapse under its own weight in time.

This isn't some 5 star recruit that we're talking about. He's a walk on getting an academic scholarship. Shouldn't matter who pays for his housing.

I agree that NCAA is a bunch of gutless, heartless money grubbing bastards, but this kid dropped out of Cornell to play football at Baylor. What am I missing here??

If not being a scholarship athlete exempted people from the rules, no school in the P5 would ever give another scholarship. They'd all be walk-ons (wink-wink, nudge-nudge). What about the heavily recruited guys who also qualify for academic scholarships? Are you gonna exempt them for eligibility rules, too, because of how their tuition & housing is paid?
The kid clearly got screwed through no fault of his own, but not every situation has to have a bad guy to boo and at whom to throw things. The rules are what they are, and they are that for a reason.

Agreed in both cases. The next 15-20 years of major "college" sports are going to be interesting to watch.

'we' are not going to like it either....it really bums me out at times as I watch this unfold....
I can only hope 'we' are wrong....
