Because of the kind of play that adds very little value to the game in exchange for plenty of risk. I've harped about this all season and we're finally seeing the consequences. Coghlan's slide was completely legal and not dirty in the slightest, but there's no reason why players should be able to slide 3 feet from the bag with their legs in the air.

I cringe watching it too. I didn't think the play was dirty by any means, but I do think there gotta be an adjustment to that rule; such as, having an arm extended towards the bag or something.

I think the rule should be, you have to slide right at the bag. Especially since that's kind of the point on a force play; as a runner you want to get to the bag as fast as possible.
