RE: UH/ Fertitta/ Big 12/ Tier One
The SEC has more American Association of University members than the Big 12 has.

SEC
Vanderbilt
Missouri
Texas A&M
Florida

Big 12
UT
Kansas
Iowa State

Owl 69 has told me 2 things Rice could bring to the SEC
1. available seats for the other universities to entertain donors-most SEC schools even have a waiting list to get season tickets so a road game to Rice would be good for them
2.academic respectability-Alabama and Auburn would like to get in the AAU and could use Rice's help.

I am no RG apologist- far from it- but the UH sandwich board is looking a little torn and ratty these days and I kind of like how Rice looks in comparison.

Serious question: Doesn't Rice bring 100% of the benefits to a P5 as UH, plus a better reputation, academics, area?

FTR- I don't see either getting the call up anytime soon, if at all, especially to the Big 12.

It'll never happen. Rice or UH has a better chance of getting into the mentally challenged SEC, and that chance is very minute for Rice. At least the SEC could benefit from having a member in Houston.

The SEC is already in Houston with A&M. I see them as the least likely candidate.

Why so certain that our (and UH's) fate is set? I doubt JK takes the job or that Patterson donates the money for the new facility if they think we are permanently stuck in the backwater

RE: UH/ Fertitta/ Big 12/ Tier One
Rice needs to hope for a full AAC-CUSA merger. I realize how unlikely it is, but it would create a 12-school division that's full of our regional rivals. Why would Patterson donate money for the EZF and why would highly qualified Karlgaard take the job? Patterson loves Rice football and wants it to survive. Karlgaard wants to bring the athletics department into the 21st century, get it on solid footing, and then leave it in a much healthier state for the next AD. I'm sorry guys, but Rice is way too small for P5, IMO. I wish it wasn't so.

The SEC has all those AAU members, but at the same time has the lowest admission standards for athletes. As far as AAU membership is concerned, Alabama and Auburn wouldn't need Rice's help when they already have Vandy, Missouri, A&M, and Florida for assistance. We all wish Rice's academic reputation would help it get in a P5, but it won't. P5 membership depends on big time ticket sales. Period. P5 conferences want schools that deliver markets and sell thousands of tickets. Rice does neither. We can't even get 500 to a game across town against UH.

Why bother to go across town to UH when I get enough games at HRS on my season tickets, except maybe one time to see the new stadium?
